Generally considered the best public golf course in the city, Dyker Beach offers a reasonably challenging course at a conspicuously low fee. Given this reputation, the place is jammed, especially on weekends, so advance reservations and early arrival are essential.

The course is adjacent to a large military base, Fort Hamilton, which has been part of the harbor fortifications since colonial days. Back in the '60s, a career army officer named Earl Woods was stationed there. On weekends, his buddies liked to spend their free time at the golf course; they eventually persuaded him to join them. He was soon hooked on the game. When he re-married and had a son, he decided to take the boy with him to a local course in southern California. And so began the career of Tiger Woods, making the Dyker course a footnote in golf history.
