Mel's mile-high meatloaf is worth the trip alone, as is the "black and white" milkshake (vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup). Whether you go to this location on Lombard or another one around the city (like on Van Ness), you'll enjoy some quality comfort food and a (somewhat cheesy but fun) retro vibe.
In terms of US food this is a sample of drive-in style 'cuisine' that has been popular in the US in the 20th century. Drive-ins were unique as you could drive your car up to the restraunt and be served in your car by 'Car-hops' who would take your order and bring the food to you. The Drive-in feature is not available any longer.Mel's held exclusive position for drive-in food in the 1950's and 60's in San Francisco, and It actually only shared 'burger' style fast food food with Doggie Diner, Tic Tock, King Creole, and Clown Alley. For some reason McDonalds didn't arrive in SF unitl the late 70's.
George Lucas shot some of the scenes for American Grafitti at the Van Ness and Mission location of Mel's...(no longer there)
