This may be the very best hike in the National Park. It takes you through changing terrain down into the Kilauea Iki crater and out again. Here is a link to a pdf brochure you can download and study before you go, or print and take along.

As with all hiking, be sure to take plenty of water, binoculars, camera, and wear sturdy shoes. A lightweight jacket can come in handy too. If you are worried by the photos of spewing lava in the crater in 1959, remember that volcanoes tend to have lead-ups to big eruptive activity. The park monitors the volcanoes very closely, as do scientists from all over the world. If Kilauea Iki was showing signs of eruptive activity, the trail would be closed.
