Although there is one more venue for live theater in Volcano HI, the Ulua Theater has not had any performances in a long time, leaving the KMC Theater as the one place you can go to see live shows. Typically the sort of show you would see there is a cultural event, such as a slack key guitar concert with Cyril Pahinui or a dance performance by a hula halau. Such events are ultimately Hawaiian in nature, and otherwise you would not see Hawaiian entertainment of this sort other than in Hawaii, most likely on the Big Island during a festival.

There has been a cultural renaissance in Hawaiian performance art in recent decades. Visitors often discover they are awed and uplifted by the non-touristy Hawaiian performances. They are different from a traditional luau show in that they are authentic, the style and story typically passed from generation to generation by kumus, or master teachers.

If you are traveling in Hawaii and have an opportunity to attend a performance by a slack key master and/or hula halau, you are likely to feel that through that singular experience, you have experienced the real Hawaii.
