Washington Square Arch bespeaks history, art, architecture, music and the soul of Greenwich Village. It was designed after a wooden one was so popular celebrating Washington's 100th year of his inauguration, that donors were eager to contribute to a permananet one. The architect was Standford White who was to meet his end in the old Madison Square Garden, shot by the husband of a former lover. It is where Fifth Avenue begins. It is also part of Washington Square Park. NYU surrounds it. Beatnicks, poets, musicians called this place their home or their home away from home. Eleanore Roosevelt lived here after FDR died. There's much more, but I am leaving that to your imagination.
