The old mission chapel at Mission Dolores is the one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco. Built in the 18th century, Mission Dolores was originally called Mission San Francisco de Assisi and was located by a small stream called Dolores which is how it got its current name. The new church built next to it was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1913. This mission was one of 21 erected up the California coast, each one week's travel from the next. These missions were built to be places where the padres could convert the Native Americans, who held this land first. The last mission is located in Sonoma. Mission Dolores sits in the Mission District of San Francisco where one can see some of the most beautifully created murals and get a real taste of the Hispanic neighborhoods....with wonderful restaurants, shops, theatres and parks.
