St. Mary's is the third of this Catholic Cathedral. Old St. Mary's, the original, located in Chinatown, was nearly destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. A second church was built and burned down in the 1980's. This beautiful structure pays homage to the many different communities here in San Francisco. With marble from Italy, tiles from Mexico, wood from California and a gorgeous organ from Padua, Italy, this massive church was built to accommodate 2500 Mass attendees. The roof, designed to resemble a Pope's mitre, allows for the sun to shine directly down on the altar. The cathedral is a definite must see for those interested in architecture as much as for any Catholic wishing to attend Mass. It is located on Geary at Gough and is on the 38 Geary bus line.
