Question

Touristy and non-touristy spots in Equador?

I'm planning to take a vacation in Equador for two weeks. I already know the usual tourist places. Would like to know about the places that are nice to visit and known only to locals. Am interested in the wilderness, nature rich places, would love to try the local cuisine in a nice restaurant. What would you suggest?

At "la provincia de Manabi", on the coast, where I live, you can visit two water/aventure sport places, one specialized in kite and wind surfing, 25 minutes south from Manta, and Crucita for parasailing, there is a theatre Festival in September in Manta, and very good unenxpesive local food, mostly of seaproducts,a archaelogical spot near Puerto Lopez, another one on the road betweeen montecristi and Portoviejo, the Pacoche Forest and San Lorenzo beach near Manta, Isla Corazon on the Chone River Stuary, near Bahia and another dozen of places similar, to this, if you need specific info you can contact me on my e mail,
Well, you should go all the places like bars, clubs and restaurants located on Vía Samborondón. You have some places known like "Plazas or Centros Comerciales" like:
C.C. La Piazza.
C.C. Bocca.
C.C. La Torre.
There is a place in front of Mall del Sol and next to Hotel Sheraton, called "la Plaza del Sol" where you cand find restaurants and can have a drink in a very relaxed atmosphere.
You have also el "Parque histórico" located on Vía Samborondón also, place with a zoo to go during the day and it is very fun.
Maybe you havent been in this place called "Diva Nicotina" on Las Peñas next to Malecón 2000. If you are here on monday and tuesday there is not better place to go.
During the day can go to Malecón del Salado also.
Hope this information helps you.

Hello
I live near the Cotopaxi Volcano area which is very touristic, but there is a lot of nature and rich traditions that only the locals go. I f you are interested in more things about this province just let me know.
Cheers
Hi. If you are close to Quito area, a nice place to know is Oyacahi. Oyacachi is a town inside the "Cayambe-Coca" natural resource. This town is in the amazonia, but to get there you have to go to Cayambe, and then you can rent a car to go to Oyacachi. The landscape is amazing, because you are in the Amazonia, but the nature belongs to Paramo, if you are lucky you can see deer, rabits, bears. In Oyacachi you can fish truchas, and buy handicrafts, if you prefer to relax, you will find Hot springs. From Quito to Oyacachi, you will need about 3 hours, you can rent a car, or you can go by bus to Cayambe, and then rent a car from Cayambe to Oyacachi. If you want a place to stay, i have a furnished apartment in Quito for 25 a night per person (the apt is for 2 persons). The apartment has swimming pool, sauna, gym. If you come alone, you just pay 25, if you come with somebody you pay 50. Look at my profile the pics of the apt.
I hope you have a nice stay in Quito!

I live in Quito, so if you want to visit some nice pleaces, I recommend Maquipucuna Reserve (hotspot and IBA), Santa Lucia Communitariosn Reserve in the Cloud Forest, Yunguilla Community in Quito and if you want delicious food, you could go to Otavalo, or Manabí. Also in Quito.....
Hey, you have so many non tourist places to go..if you need more information check my link or contact me to .
If you really wanna be a local:

1. Ask for "arroz con menestra y carne" in Guayaquil
2. Visit Ambato or Riobamba and try "Llapingacho", it's delicious in the food market OR "cuy"

These are NOT nice restaurants but it's a non-tourity spot for aliens
There is a beautiful place in the coast of manabi called canoa. We hare a nice restaurant with great variety of food called cafe flor.
Also to the south of manta we ride a quiet and the only place in front on the beach with a view of the isla de la plata. Around it there is a forest too.
If you like it contact me...
Are you going to be based in quito, if you are, try to ask about trips to Mindo, or some other lodges in the north west of Quito, there are very beautiful places located in that area of the cloud forest.
I dont think you are interested in visiting malls or things like that, specially in the big cities, as you said in the question you are interested in nature, i dont know why other keep suggesting for you to visit malls!!!!!!!!!
Try to ask more about protected forest called Pasochoa, or the ecuadorian version of the inca trail, you can visit the south of ecuador, places like Loja and its surroundings that are very nice and not many people go there, if you need more suggestions please contact me to my personal email,
OK:
A/ if you are in the Otavalo region:
1/ in Peguche village there is a man that owns a restaurant called Sumac Micuy wich is a local house where indigenous people were celabrating mariages. Actualy he also recieves tourists with a cultural show specialy on friday and saterday night due to the saterday Otavalo Market. Realy worth and good place to eat Cuy but have to order it with 24h advance! Even so not realy crowded!

2/ In Quiroga village ask for a family working with Cabulla fibers! Family is realy frendly and shows you real life out of cities! Also in that same village during WE you have oportunities to see Cok fighting, Will have to ask for because it is not open to general public but more in the backyards of private houses!

B/ In the earea of Baños de aguas Santas.
Go to the public thermal bathes at 06.00am (beside the waterfall in downtown) without breakfast! You will not only enjoy bathing but chating with locals! The later you go, the more tourist (even local tourists) come.

C/ In the Riobamba area:
1/ Go to Urbina and even overnoight there! It is maybe cold but spectacular views of the Chimborazo. This you can also in both refuges located at 4800m or 5000m!!! When you drive, bike or wlk down to Riobamba you will pass a village called Casa Condor where you can also spend a day with them sharing their activities or going to scool. They offer beds also wich helps the comunity with other incomes!

2/ Go to the little village of Guano but not to the shops itself. Go to some backyards where you will see the local waving carpets...

3/ All the way from Riobamba to Alausi you will see the Puruhua comunity where you will be welcome. Nothing special except share their daylife! This is a good place for pictures and Ecuador in the 1900!

D/ In the area of Guayaquil:
1/ go to Puerto del Moro close to Playas Villamill where you can take a little boat a sail to what is called Birds island (the major fregat bird population). On the way you will see mangroves, fisherman catching crabs, lots of shore birds, dolphins and thousands of fregat birds in their nesting area.

2/ All the villages along the coast from Salinas up to Manta passing Puerto Lopez are worth. Regarding when you come it will be sunny (december to may) or foggy (jun up to november but this is the best moment to come and see whales! (july up to end of september).

More info you will see on my description or visit
skype me if you want at galanetecuador
if you really want to get away i recommend the yasuni national park - the very easternmost corner of Ecuador. pure amazon jungle and no tourists - however, not easily accessible either. go to Tena and then down the river napo a few hours by boat canoe till you get to Tiputini...
You could visit places, near Quito, such as Pasochoa, at the beach Salinas or Casablanca in Esmeraldas. For the local cusine in Quito, Ceviches de la Ruminahui.
I am a biologist and I always look for the natural places where only few tourists can go. Ecuador is probably the country with the highest biodiversity indexes in the World and some places are good examples:

1. The Maquipucuna Reserve: North west of Quito, 2 hours driving in the road that goes from Quito to Nanegalito. This place is really awesome. The slopes of the Andes in this zone is full of live, from Exotic birds to amazing orchids. You can check their website at .

2. The Buenaventura Reserve: This is only for serious explorers. Sir David Attenborough, tha world famous naturalist and film maker of BBC Wildlife, called it "The best birding spot in Ecuador", and he is right. You have to take the road from Machala to Piñas, and take a "taxi truck", to the Buenaventura Reserve. You can reserve a lodge in the rainforest at and if you want to see a "live video feed" of the reserve, you can go to .

3. The Jima Tambillo Reserve: a 2 hours driving from Cuenca to Jima, will take you to a very special Páramao and Rainforest reserve in the slopes of the Andes to the Amazon. This is the richest paramo I have ever seen and it is managed by the community of Jima, where you can ask for Don Pepe Zhunio, the leader of the community. You can spend the night at their small hotel in Jima, and try some of the delicacies of the region like the special "Locro de papas", the trouts and drink some "Canelazos", made out of sugar cane rum.

4. Do you want some "Wildlife conservation experience" ? Then, you have to go to "Los Monos" wildlife resuce reserve. Located just 15 minutes from the amazon city of Puyo, you can find this reserve where the owner have a special place for guests. While you are in Puyo, ask for them.

Regarding food... are you an adventurer or do you prefer something more conservative? If you are an adventurer, and want to to try some exotic food, try "Cuy" when you visit Cuenca, "Churos" if you can go to Cayambe (In Cayambe, you can also try some nice "Leaf cheese" and Cocoa) and the WONDERFUL food of Manabí, in the coast of Ecuador.

In Manabí, you have to go to Machalilla National Park. It has some spectacular places like Aguas Blancas and Hostería Andaluz. My favourite food in Ecuador is in Manabí. I love sea food and there is something for everyone. Send me a note if you want some more information at
i suggest you try the local food in the local places, like bizzard food ans stuff like that there are not better places to eat then the local restaurants....hope you enjoy and for more information write to me my name is tatiana
