Answers

It is Taprobane
Sri Lanka was known by a variety of names: ancient Greek geographers called it Taprobane and Arabs referred to it as Serendib (the origin of the word "serendipity"). Ceilão was the name given to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese when they arrived on the island in 1505, which was transliterated into English as Ceylon.

It was called thambapanni by the first sri lankan king. thambapanni means yellow sand.

The British called the island CEYLON, The origin of the name Ceylon is in the Portuguese time. Serendib was given by the muslims, arabs. Still you can find this name on the island, several hotels uses this name.
Taprobane is the ancient antique name of the island given by the romans or greeks! Also this name is used in our time by several hotels.
the island had a lot of name, it was called as "the island of the thousand of names" here in spanish is more discriptive; but i can tell u the name it had: lanka, Lankadweepa, Simoundou, Taprobane, Serendib y Selan and then ceylon.

According to me the first name should be Lanka Pura or Hela Dveepa. Lanka means beautiful and Hela dveepa derives from the word Sivu Hela means 4 tribes. Before the arrival of Prince Wijaya there were sinhalese in this island and sinhala also derived from the word SivuHela. After Wijayas arrival it became Tambapanni and later on other names as Serendib, Taprobane, Ceilao,Ceylan and british time it became Ceylon. When we became a repubblic we took the oldest name lanka again.
Ceylon during the period of British governance. Lankadeepa or Lakdiwa before that.
Thambapanni nothing else!
According to the ancient details of Tolami's map Sri Lanka was named as "Thapprobain"
