Best places to visit in Sri Lanka and best places to avoid?

We are on a trip to Sri lanka in June.Would like to know best places to visit. Which are the best hotels there? Which areas in Sri Lanka should we avoid?

Country: Sri Lanka

I am an English guy from Bedfordshire who has been visiting Sri Lanka since 1980 and living here now with my Sri Lankan wife since 2005. We have two new nice modern furnished chalets for rent about 15 minutes from the airport and 7/8 from the main tourist area and beaches in Negombo and town centre. Each chalet sleeps 2/3 and comprises a lounge, bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, tel/fax, free internet use, free satellite tv use, free dvd + films use, free daily maid service and free tea/coffee in the chalet. We are available for service and security 24 hours daily. You can self cater or we will provide a continental breakfast for $2.50 per person and lunch and dinner for $5 per person daily. You can order meals (local or Western) as and when required. The cost of your chalet just $100 (USD) weekly per chalet. We have one available in June for two weeks. A Dutch family have already booked the other and we are almost fully booked up now until the end July. 50% of our guests return again and again. We can arrange tours for you at local (not tourist) rates and recommend where its safe to go and where its not safe to go. We have excellent references from ex clients the EU including the UK Germany Sweden and Holland, USA Australia and Russia. So if we can be of assistance please mail us for details and photographs. Hi Noreen,

As long as you avoid the very north and east of the country, you are fine. The best areas to visit are Colombo the capital, The western coastal towns like Bentota, Galle, Tangalle, then down to Yala which is a national park and the best place to see wild Leopard and a lot of birds. Other areas are in the hill country of Kandy - a famous Buddhist temple and Nuwara Eliya which is known for its tea estates. The ancient ruined cities of Polonaruwa, Sigiriya rock fortress, and Dambulla cave temples are also fascinating places to see also with plenty of wild elephants in national parks closeby.

Best Hotels in these areas:
Colombo - Casa Colombo () +94 114520130
Galle - Dutch House
Tangalle - Amanwella
Yala - Yala village
Nuwara Eliya - Tea Trails
Kandy - Theva Residency
Polonnaruwa/Sigiriya/Dambulla - The Deer Park

Hope this info is usefull. Have a fabulous holiday in June
Dear Noreen,

I'm pleased to hear that you will visit Sri Lanka in June. The best places are down south where there are Beaches and lots of relaxing can be done. If you are interested you could contact me on my mail ( I could inform you the places and the tour costs.
Hi Noreen,
I'm Christina, I pretty much spend my time travelling arounc Sri Lanka, I avoid Colombo ( the hustle and bustle of the city is a little too much) and the northern and eastern parts of the country due to the ethnical conflict. If you want to see Sri Lanka, there's lots to see, from ancient temples, to amazing beach on the coastal lines, with clear blue water, sandy shores and even clearer skys. then you go dolphin and whale watching.. along with camping in the forest.
for a very small island.. the places within it is highly versatile.. if you think i can help you with anything, please dont hesitate to contact me.. Cheerrs.. christina

Well, You have to let u know what your looking forwed to see in sri lanka..If its the beach, then the down south is the best. Also if you like the hills u could go visit nuwara eliya, kandy etc.. Historic sites also can be found in Anuradaputa and polonnaruwa.
In Colombo, Its a bit of a rush and all.Mostly on weekdays the roads get closed for security reasons. The best hotels are Hilton, Trans Asia(personally i like this one), The cinnamon Grand. Also If your looking for a less luxury hotel u could choose The Holiday Inn.(3 star)
Down south the best beaches are from Beruwala to Galle.( I would say Unawatuna), Beruwala u have some good hotels like Rivarina, Neptune,etc..They are OK. U could go the other way to Marawila were there is also some nice place's. Hotel Club palm bay and In nigambo their is the Browns Beach hotel (also a nice place).
If u like the hill country u could go to bandarawela, Nuwara eliya or Kandy which is the capital of the hill country.
I would also say avoid the north and east but recently i visited the Nilawely beach in trincomali, I still cant believe my eyes.Cos its the most beautiful beaches iv ever seen. But going there is risky but i feel that it was wroth. but i advice to avoid that also.
So if you need more info please contact me

Well it depends on the way you want to spend your visit. If you want to sun bath it would be down south, Like Galle, Matara, If you want to take a look at our Natural beauty it would be best to go the hill country with the chilly wether and the greenery. For wildlife it will be Yala or Udawala were you can see our elephants and many more types of animals.

If you can please tell me about what you plan to do in the visit meaning what type of stuff you want to do I can be more specific on the locations.

Your sincerely
Its better to avoid colombo, and head straight towards Kandy or DOwnsouth.

If you go towards Kandy, you can roam around the hill country and expeirence one of the best weather in the world. There are lots of greenery, waterfalls ,tea estates and many scenic locations for you to visit. Hotel rates ranges from around $30 per person upwards.

You can also select to head Down South where you get the sunny beaches and have a boat trip and visit to see Corals.
you can get cheap accomodation if you get hol dof any localytes. I also would be glad to help you without ant charge.

Hoping to see you soon in Sri lanka.

Sri Lanka being a small island has a lot to offer. When you travel down south you pass many sites that are worth a visit. You have the Turtle Farm in Kosgoda where you see how the eggs are buried and the turtle in the different stages of growth.
You have the hikkaduwa beach where you can see corals and which is a great place for a swim.
You ca go further south, to Galle, where you have the fort and the lighthouse.

Hill Country
You can go upcountry to experience the chill that Sri Lanka has to offer. There are beautiful scenarios with tea estates, factories, waterfalls and gardens. You can go to the Ambewela farm and to Worlds end (if you like a long walk). You can go to the Dalada Maligawa.

You can go to Sigiriya which is a historical location and to the Dambulla cave temple.

You can go to the nature parks like Yala or visit forests like the sinharaja.

Depending on what you want from your holiday, you can choose which places to visit.

Sri Lanka has many hotels in varying price ranges and depending on the location you can choose any hotel to fit your budget.

Areas to avoid
Definitely you have to avoid the north and the east. Colombo is an area that you musn't miss even though its a typical city. You can go for a "not-so-expensive" shopping spree.

Well you can contact me for more information.
Best places;
Down South of the country
Hill country
Anuradapura & Polonnaruwa area.
Avoid Northern part of the country.
It is good to avoid north and east where the war is going on. The places to visit depend on your preference, if it is to relax and down south and hill country would be great. in both places you have hotels to suit your preference. if it is for history Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla would be good. If it is nature and scenery with a bit of relaxation Kandy, Riverston ( a nice hilly area not much frequented by tourist yet) to Wasgamuwa national park from there you can go to Nuwara Eliya (hill country) via mahiyanganaya (where you can see native Sri lankan inhabitants)and Badulla. If you prefers to do more adventurous you can go on hikes to Meemore In matale district (a very remote village blessed with good people and superb scenery)or Kithulgala for white water rafting. So all depends on how you want your holiday to be. One thing you can be sure of Sri Lanka is a unique place a place blessed with so many nice places. If you want more information please let me know.

have a great holiday
Hi, Nice to hear that you are visiting SL. Except North any part of the country is full of different marvellous places to enjoy. According to your interests, I can help you to visit and find any place here.

Apart from so many things like the beach , hills, dolphins, cultural trips that u can indulge in , June/July is a great time for visiting Trincomalee beach in the north east. it will take you about 5 hrs from colombo if you leave very early in the morning and avoid traffic, the route is very comfortable, and you will enjoy the white powder sand on the clean beach, which has very relaxing 6 inch waves... Nilaveli Beach Hotel is the best choice in that region, the've got new rooms, extremely comfortable and reasonable, great food, and superb service. Dolphins watching and tours are a very popular pastime now in Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya (in Puttalam District, 3 hrs from Colombo) boasts the best and untouched beaches on the west coast where you can see dolphins about 15 to 20 mins from the shore but dolphin season is not that great after end March or very latest around 1st week April. Amongst places to avoid, yes I would think avoid the traffic in Colombo. there is so much to see and do in SL, all depends what your interests are eg; culture, hills, beach, Ayurveda ...

Hi there..

The best places to visit during this time of the year is the hill co0untry. Especially Nuwara Eliya, where the April Season is on. The Rest of the Country will be at a Stand still in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of April due to the Places been closed for the New Year.. But if You really want to learn the culture of the People here, then you should time it accordingly.

June would generally be a Warm month towards the coastal areas. But there would be Showers in the Hill country.

At any given time Avois d the North and East of Sri Lanka, even though the military is clearing up the terrorist held areas, it will be a while until things are Normal.

Dolphin watching in Kalpitiya is the latest attraction. If you do a google searchnyou may be able to get some valuable info.

mail me on for further assistance if you need it.

Hi Noreen
I am not a travel agent neither bussinessman. I travel a lot for my work. When I went through the replies I can see you get enough feedback. yes avoid north and east at your first visit. It no need to visit colombo capital either. all interesting areas are romotly from Colombo. all depends on time. you have oppertunity to visit to see natural beauty, wild life and ruins. all kinds of hotels are here if you wish to have 5 star facility its here but some tourist like to take experince the culture of sri lanka and stay like that. The tourist i met are first choose 5 star fasilities then move to cultural type hotels and lifestyle.I am in Nuwara eliya where a popular tourist place for nice seenaries and climate. dont mis ruins and wildlife too. give you details if you need and reply me. email .
have a nice tour.
if you prefer to have a tourist guide i can arrenge a friend who is a professional tourist guide for small groups. cheeper to have freelance tourist guide.
Hello Noreen,

What are the nice places, first what do you like?
Ok, in the South you have the most tourist because the See, Hikkaduwa (I dont Like) 75 km under Colombo, Unawatuna is a small village 110km from Colombo very nice, futher South you will find Jalle National park, it's now again open but maby in June it's ok. You will find Leopards and the rest. 10 Km above Unawatune there is the Dutch Fort of Galle Beautiful ( I 'am Dutch Ha Ha Ha) nice town. The South - East cost the use for surfing.
Then in the middel of the country you will find Nuwara-Eliya very famous because the thea plantations, it's highest area in Sri Lanka so it can be cool in the evening.
The heighist mountain in Sri Lanka is Adam's Peak this is for Sri Lankaans a Hole Mountain because the say on the top you will find a food step of Lord Boedha. To come there you can visit Rathnapura the gems city (Whatch your self) to Adams peak I think maby 30 - 35 km.
For me the nicest town is Kandy, you will find the big Boedist Temple of the Tooth, everyboby speaks good English.
If you like to play golf you will find outside Victoria Golf Club.
Then from Kandy you go up 55 km and you come in Dambulla, the biggest Vegetable market in Sri Lanka, the have the biggest Boedha statue in S.L. and you will find in the caves and Temple complex fresco's thousend years old. 15 Km futher up the can not miss The big Rock of Sigeriya absoluut for me the most impressive side. Now you are in the Culture Triangle of Sri Lanka. On the left you will find Anaradnapura the old Capitol of S.L. - and on the left the the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. If you come from Dambulla you have to go up 20 kim and you come true Habarana the junction where you can go every where; left Anaradnapura - right Polonnaruwa - Up the North A9 Highway is open for public again after 20 years Jaffna - Trincomalle - Ninaveli ( beach wauw buth nobodyn there).
Yeh and then it's slowly over.

Take Care

Hi Noreen,
I've lived in SL all my life and love to travel around the country whenever i get the chance to do so.
Sri Lanka has a lot to offer and the best places and best hotels will depend on what sort of holiday or adventure you are looking for.
The places to avoid at the moment will be the Northern and Eastern provinces, although they will be opening up for business and travel pretty soon. However, it all depends on what sort of holiday you are looking for.
Whether its relaxing on a white sandy beach or meandering through the lush green tea estates of Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Haputale or visiting the Historic cities of Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa or going on safari in Yala, Uda Walawa, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya or trecking in the tropical rainforest of Sinharaja or just walking down the old cobbled streets of the ancient Ducth Fort in Galle, Sri Lanka has just about everything within a few hours drive.
Let me know what sort of holiday you have in mind and what destinations you think you'd like to see and I'll let you know what other interesting sites and destinations you can take in along the way and the also recommend the best places to stay in each.
Dear Friend,
your request does not specify, what you need. so i will advice only one thing. other than north and some part of east, sri lanka is safe. so you can go any where. so you have to avoid only that area.
Hi Noreen.
Thanks for writing to me.Yes, Sri Lanka is a small but a very beautifull is popular amonge tourists for its golden beach' ancient cities, wild life & cold mountans in central parts of the country.
There are certain areas you ll have to avoid like nothern & eastern part because of ongoing war.But i hope by june the war will end here coz SL troops has almost surrendered those gurrillaz.
So please let me know little bit about u. The purpose u are visiting, how many of people coming ete.
Cost of lodging is very minimum here.

Hi Noreen,
Reading the many answers here I can endorse them as having covered most of the queries a first time traveler would best be equipped with. If you can postpone till August then you can see the notable Kandy Perahera, which is an eye catching pageant complete with loads of beautifully adorned elephants, drummers, dancers, the chieftains in ceremonial garb and heaps more. The best place to view is the from the Queens Hotel. You need to book your seat / room straight ahead. This is an annual event to coincide with the full moon.

Places to avoid? The east coast has the most breathtaking beaches. Though recently cleared, it is still not too safe. But if you are willing to take the risk (no recent incidents) its a lovely place to go to.
Best Places to visit in Sri Lanka are the historical sites in Anuradhapura,Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya,Then the beach areas in Eastern Sri Lanka,There are many national parks to see elephants and also an Elephant orphanage where you can see bottle feeding baby elephants,Many Turtle farms, also museums which are worth looking at.Also many relegeous and historical sites with tea plantations and montains in the hill country with cold climate. You must avoid the nothern part of Sri Lanka where there ia a civil disturbance.More details from

Hi Noreen
In our days we can not tell anymore to avoid special places or provinces in Sri Lanka, it depends what you are looking for. The touristic places in the western and southern provinces are well known and you will find many nice hotels in every price range.
If you like to discover new land so you have to visit to southeast and east. There are some lovely unspoiled beaches and you will find lovely hotels or guest houses.
We just have traveled from down south all along the east coast up to the Jaffna peninsula and we can organize for you something very special and new.
We also are offering Boutique suites at the most romantic beach in the south Kosgoda. This place still is nearly tourist-free. Please visit our homepage or contact us for further informations about the island and all his secret places. Our well experienced event & tour operator will do everything your heart desires and we would be very happy to meet you.
To avoid in my opinion are the very crowded destinations like for example Hikkaduwa. To avoid are also some places were happens some strange stories. For detailed informations please contact us.

Hi Noreen,
Greetings from Sri Lanka !!!
Thanks very much for your enquiry, Depending on the number of days you plan to spend here we can arrange a tour of your choice, Pinnawala elephant orphanage, Kandy, N;Eliya, South Beaches, Trincomalee, Cultural Triangle Includes Sigiriya etc and some Safari as well. Jaffna in the North is under reconstruction and does not have enough facilities for tourists as yet and would be afvisable to avoid for the moment and would most definitely keep you posted should there be any changes by April ot May.Please fo not hesitate to contact me anytime, if you you have any further questions.
Warm Regards,
Once there were many places to avoid visiting in the country. Fortunately now whole land full of best places to visit and no any place to avoid.
First of all I need to know your tast of visiting. If you are interesting to watching whales. just now our Navy has started new program with the comfortable ship. It starts from Galle fort. If you are interesting safari tours you have to visit Yala Nationala Park in Southern or cultural ruined cities in Nothern Central. Or for a natural scenes in Middle part of the country.
Dehiwala Zoo, Dutch Period Museum, Fort Clock Tower, Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Hall and Mt Lavinia Beach in Colombo are good to see. And, some famous beaches of SriLanka are Negombo, Mount Lavinia, Kalutara, Beruwela, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle and Arugam Bay .

To have a well organized trip, I would suggest you to book your holiday package through Yatra. Com, they are really the best travel portal.
If you book an all inclusive package from such travel portal, which would include travel, lodging, and even dinner reservations, all you'll be left doing is packing. They also advise you on local customs and other important things you need to know. Because of these facilities, I always take help from and suggesting same to you.
