The best transportation is private car or Taxi because the train system is out of date and no accommodation and second very slowly.
thank you for your advice but i was wondering if you know the details on the train journey.... also if you know, how much would this journey cost by taxi/.private car. many thanks
Hi, The best way to Arugambay is by road (taxi or private car - 6 to 8 hours from Colombo) as the train is only up to Badulla. From there you have to take a bus to Monaragala and a connecting bus to Pottuvil / Arugambay. The Panama bus from Monaragala will take you to Arugambay. If you take the Pottuvil bus then you have to take a tuk tuk (3 wheeler) to reach ABay which is 5 km south. If you go by car the fastest would be Colombo - Ratnapura - Pelmadulla - Udawallawe - Tanamanwila - Wellawaya - Buttala - Monaragala - Siyambalanduwa - Pottuvil - Arugambay. (The hill road will take you from Pelmadulla to Balangoda, Belihuloya, Beragala, Koslanda to Wellawaya - This is a more winding but picturesque road to take if you have more time)

A good web site to view the small hotels available on ABay is which is run by the ABHA (Arugam Bay Hotel Association). A lot of information about the bay and tourist information is available on this site.

Although getting there may be touch it is definitely a must do as the area has so much to offer not only to a Surfer but to appreciate nature, culture, history (Archeological sites), wild life (Elephants, Birds, Leopard, Crocodile, Deer and an occasional Bear), Water sports (diving, fishing, kite surfing, wind surfing). 16km south of ABay is Panama a sleepy fishing village which will lead you to Okanda and the entrance to Kumana Bird Sanctuary.
thank you so much for your advice. can i ask what rough price would it be to travel by taxi, private car hireif you knowthis. thank you
Train rides in Sri Lanka is not luxurious but far better and comfortable than the bus services. Taxi rides are expensive so if you are budget tourists, I'd say its a no no :) Besides its really easy to get turned into the wrong deals when you are approaching the taxi services or drivers. Don't worry too much about it and just come and enjoy it here. Just remember to read your lonely planet, get the proper information from the proper channels and not to trust too many would be helpers from the streets of Sri Lanka. Frankly, if you play wise, you can enjoy a hell of a vacation here.

There are many places that offer cheap apartments in Arugam bay. Just look around.
Cheers.

Ps - This is the address of the Sri lanka Railway web page and try using the applet on it to find out the times of the trains. I use it and its pretty helpful. Take care guys!

Thanks for the advice. Think going to get the train sounds interesting and prob will see loads. Thanks again
There is no train station at Arugam Bay.
Nearest is Batticaloa (3-4 hrs. north of the Bay) or Ella (3 hrs. west of Abay)
Busses do connect
I would not suggest a Train as All The Train Stations are at least 3-4hrs away from Arugmbay. I would suggest the Cheapest and Fastest way of getting to Arugbay would be the Bus. Get the Colombo Monaragala Bus and you can then get the Potuvil Bus from Monaragala Town. As its around 6-7 hrs Journey i would suggest you leave very early morning.

As for places to Stay Try to go to Hilton Arugambay. Its around 30 Dollars a Night. You can contact Rahim who is the owner of the Hilton. Remember to visit Peanut Farm which is around 10 km away from Hilton towards the South.
Try the road, not the train. Hire a Taxi the best if u can afford. I can fix you up a taxi for a good price. If not the BUS.

Hi, you can't proceed to A-Bay by train, cause trains are only to Matara. and the public bus service also not luxury enough, i don't recommend any foreign traveler to travel in any public service in sri lanka, cause its kinda hard for them, the best solution is get a taxi...
Arugam Bay is an awesome place. There are 2 ways get there by train. Take a train to Batticalo and take a taxi from there. Or take a train to Badulla and a Taxi from there (I recommend this because you are going through the tea country it is beautiful).

You need to make an early reservation to get a first class cabin.

I recommend you should contact a travel agent to arrange traveling and accommodation for you.

Hope you will enjoy your stay...................
