Question

I have been convinced to go to Cheju island. Would you recommend doing the trip by boat, and if yes, how long does it take?

Hi

I've never been to Jeju island myself but have friends that have been there. I would suggest air travel if you are time restricted and the time it takes to get there depends on witch boat you take. Jeju has so much to do and I think you can see more worth-while things than Jeju. I can also suggest Uellong-do (island) and a trip to Dokdo island. It is absolutely beautiful there and you have to take a ferry there from Pohang. The travel time is not to long if you take the faster (but more expensive) ferry.

In your previous question you said you are interested in history. I would strongly suggest you visit Gyeongju the millenial old capital of Korea. There are so many historical sites and a must see if you visit Korea. It is in the Gyeongsanbuk-do province and about 4 hours by bus from Seoul. A very nice place to visit as well is the Suwon fortress in Suwon, not far from Seoul. That is a day trip, since it takes a lot of time to walk the fortress, but there is also a folk village with lots of traditional crafts you can visit.

I think the tours to the DMZ are still going on, but unfortunately that is as close as you'll get to the North at this stage, but it still is worth the trip. If you decide to do that, do the combined tour with the 3rd tunnel and the visit to Panmunjeon military base.

Yeosu in the Southwest is also a beautiful place, with lots of little islands that can be visited.

If you need any other information feel free to ask.

Enjoy your time in Korea.
The timing consideration determines your travel plans. In Pusan harbor, a car ferry style service is available. It is a kind of cruise ship. Rooms of different prices are offered to guests. These range in size according to your number of roommates. (2-50) is somewhat usual. The length is 12 hours. I left at 7:30 pm and arrived the next morning at the same time. I enjoyed the sunset in Pusan and then the sunrise atmosphere when getting near Jeju. The time in middle was enjoyable exploring the boat and seeing the moonlit ocean. The shorter ship experience is offered closer to the Yusu side of the coast. This trip is about 4 hours. I have flown many times from almost all of the airport destinations. But would like the 12 hour cruise ship experience one more time.
I found the trip from Busan a bit too long at 11 hours. I would suggest you go from Mokpo, which is an interesting town to explore in its own right. Depending on the ferry, it takes 3hrs10 up to about 5 hours. In Mokpo, you can visit the maritime museum, Yodal Mountain and the Wando beaches and forest.
Like the other mentioned below, your timing consideration determines your travel plans. No matter whether you do the trip by boat or not, there are 10 places you can't miss in Jeju Island and here are places you shoud visit there.

For your info, i want to search the following website that you can refer to.

Hope this info helps you enjoy your trip to Jeju Island.
I am not so sure about the ferry from Inchon to Cheju but I can tell you It takes too many hours ,about 12hours. The best bet You can take is to take the train to Mokpo- my home town. Many people told you to go to Cheju since I recommended that island.Yes, It's an exellent choice. Even the late Jackson once mentioned He wanted to have that island for his performance in Korea. Actually that remark made all Korean people angry. There's a train called KTX in Korea. Rather expensive but fast. It depends on how much you are planning to spend transfortation. Fast one is expensive you may guess. As soon as you get to this city, take a taxi to the ferry or you can take a little stroll. It's not that far. fifteen minutes' walk will take you to the ferry. By boat it takes about five hours to the island.
Whole island is the sightseeing place.Submarine tour, Falls and folk villafe and so on. It;s not a big island but too many things to see. Personally It took me 5 days to explore the island.
However It wuld be a lot better to take a flight considering the travel time and money
Because You have to think of time table ofthe boat and train. Considering the other bonus to see other city It might not be a bad idea.
Just fly to Cheju first from Inchon and go back to Seoul by boat and train.
That would be the best. Contact me if you need a guided tour around Cheju and near my hometown.
From Busan it takes about 12 hours. If your coming from Seoul, I would just pay the extra expense and fly. But by all means do go, it is well worth the trip.
If you don't have a lot of time, you're better off flying, because the boat is overnight.
I will not recommand the boat at all.
The boat is perfect for a small budjet, but it takes 11 hours from Busan, and believe me, the confort is not so good.
In some case, you have to share a big room, you sleep on the floor with the others passagers, and some can be sick or just noisy.
By plane, from Daegu or Busan it takes less than 1 hour and the price is very similar. (20 000 or 30 000 wons more).
It's the best option.
I live in Jeju and I tried both, so many times.
Nothing compare the plane.
