I want to go with my kids to Hawaii. Which island would be best to got o with 8,10 and 12 year olds?

City: Honolulu

State: Hawaii

Country: United States

the main inland of Hawaii is always the best for kids. because there is so much to do. i would say rent a car and drive all over the inland. and see the best parts of the inland ..that is.. meet the real people of Hawaii. nd go to the windward side of the inland.
The island of Oahu. Waikiki beach has lots of things to do and see. The island of Hawaii has nice beaches but kids will get bored easy there.
sorry i am not an expert on hawaii i am on the mainland usa east coast; i have heard kuai is a very nice island the most north very tranquil/ but i would imagine Hawaii would have the most activities and the most options for a tourist family with kids. i would advise to find a resort and take in beach activities first and leave other activities for bad weather. And I think it advisable to stay in a nice tourist environment family oriented as Hawaii would not be the place to improvise just exploring with kids. best regards Nick
Living in SF Bay Area, we have visited Hawaii almost every year. Here are my impressions of these beautiful islands.

Oahu. More flights from mainland to Honolulu, thus cheaper. More crowded, more things to do, more happening, etc. If you haven't been to Hawaii ever, perhaps Oahu is a good start. If you like less crowd and more space, read on.

Maui. There are 4 main areas: Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua, and Wailea. Lahaina is the busy town with many restaurants and shops. It is near Kaanapali and Kapalua. Kaanapali has a strip of beach with many hotels and developments. Busiest resort in Maui. Kapalua is near the northen tip of Maui. Less crowd but can be extremely windy. Wailea is at the southwest side of Maui. Less crowded than Kaanapali and more space. I prefer Wailea over Kapalua and Kaanapali.

Big Island. My favorite island as the landscape is less developed. Less people. I love to visit the Volcanoes National Park.

Kauai. Too wet for me.

Lanai. Been there. Too quiet and too secluded.

BTW, I am going back to Big Island this summer.
Oahu is the most developed as a hotel/tourist city. Pearl Harbor is there and has museums.
Kauai is beautiful if your kids like camping or diving.
Maui has a volcano you drive up to the top of
The Big Island has more "city" things.
All of the islands have great things to do for families. It really depends on what type of place you want to visit. Some of the islands are small and rural and others are much larger with some urban areas.

Oahu/Honolulu probably has the most to do. There are the typical tourist things for families to do, but Honolulu is also a large somewhat metropolitan city. With that comes the things for local families - Children's Discovery Center, Bishop Museum, Hawaii Theater, etc.

All of the other islands provide a lot of family activities, but they are more geared for tourists. Depending on what you like to do and how creative you are, you can plan a great family outing/picnic on any of the islands.
