Start your trip in Khao San road in Bangkok. It's heaven for backpackers in SE Asia. From there, you can get every info you need
I concur with Khun Chinawut's answer.
Let me elaborate a little more: Amongst South-East Asian countries Thailand is the country where you most likely get the lowest prices to be followed by Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia; Singapore is more expensive. The infrastructure and transport facilities here are very good, guesthouses/hotels plenty and food available 24 hours.
For food you can live on 5 USD per day easily. For accomodation you may calculate between 10 and 20 USD per day. As far as transportation is concerned non-aircon buses are the cheapest, however for long-distance travel budget airlines like AirAsia and the lot may give you good deals as well.
Cost for visas is about 30 USD.
train..
What Wilfied said! Tips on keeping to your budget include, If traveling w a female, she should carry the money and pay for things. Avoid Souvenirs bigger than keychains. Avoid capital cities - don't take advice from cab drivers (motorcycle drivers and ticket agents are more likely to know e.g. where to stay).
I'm not sure you will be interested in " Work and traveling at the same time" or not.
But I think this is the best way and you could learn new sight from the way too.
