You have actually chosen the peak season for your Thailand visit, which is from mid Dec to mid Jan, where lots of Thai people go on holiday, too.
And honestly saying, your choice of Ko Samui is not a good one as Ko Samui and the east coast of south Thailand will get the winter rains (NW monsoon) during that time of the year, and very frequently a rough and choppy sea. If I were you, I would change my destination to the west coast, e.g. Phuket, Ko Lanta, Krabi, Trang, etc, etc. Good luck!
thats good to know thanks for the info, we are just going there for a few days to relax then off to phuket. dont want to spend a lot on accommodation but want to be on the beach.
For a reasonable prices beach bungalow have a look at
have fun,

Ooooops...... What is "cheap" during Yearend Peak Season and
Koh Samui??? and then .... "as long as its quiet" ??? ....
Eventually wrong destination ? Sorry
It is certainly true about the weather at that time of year but I wouldn't let that stop me from going there. It is a great stopping off point on your way to Phuket. There is a little resort on the way to Chewang from the ferry called Thong Takien Villa. This is a great little place with a beach, the owner is friendly and helpful. It has been a while since I have been there but it was reasonably priced for the island.Have fun
I would recommend Magic Bungalows, they are on a very attractive part of the beach at LAMAI (much better than Chaweng). peaceful, but also a small town,so plenty of restaurants etc.But the food at MAGIC is wonderful too, eat on the beach in the dark... truly "MAGIC".
Otherwise, take a look at SAWADEE,COM
You are planning to go at peak season,so book NOW!

As has been said already its xmas and new year time so will be pretty busy although its been a very quiet year what with the recession. Also the weather could be better then. But I would go for BIG BUDDHA BEACH as its less well know than Lamai and Cheweng. Before you decide have a drink at the BBC (BIG BUDDHA CAFE)and talk with Mark the owner he's the king of knowledge about Samui.Or you can e/mail him at Personally I would go just south of Pataya to the island of Koh Samet -much more beautiful and hours easier to get there and better weather. If you do go to Samui the train journey is a killer, then you have the bus and then the ferry and you lose a day If you can afford to fly its only one hour and is well worth it just to see the airport and arrive not tired out. Best of luck. Graham
Hi check out the site
Happy holidays.
Agree with the above Big Buddha Beach is beautiful and away from the crowds. Shambala bungalows are comfortable and reasonably priced, and right on the beach. The restaurant is really good and the management and staff are knowledgeable and friendly. All the amenities are close by. Enjoy!
If you are just going for a few days and you want the "bungalow at the beach" experience, you can better go to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Both islands are close to Koh Samui and can be easily and inexpensively reached by overnight bus and ferry journey from Bangkok (i.e. with Lomphraya).

However during New Year the weather situation will be as mentioned by other authors above. The Adaman Sea region (Phuket, Krabi, Trang) will be nicer weatherwise. Closer to Bangkok you could try Koh Chang or Koh Samet. Both also offer "bungalow at the beach" experiences.

Keep in mind New Year will be the "peak season". It will not run that "peak" this year, though. Nevertheless start looking for a place no later than end of September.
