My wife and i went to Nice last year for 4 days and also went to Monaco on a day trip.We travelled in early october. We are planning...

...another trip this year in early October with 2 friends. We would like to explore more of the area,Should we hire a car, where would be best to stay. Should we use Nice as our base or do a twin centre. Can anyone recommend where we should stay and good value for money accomodation. We plan to go for 6-7 nights. We really love exploring villages and culture during the day and the hustle and bustle of city life at night, Any tips, advice, recommended restaurants would be most welcome. Thanks E

you will always be more free to do your own thing if you have a car. For culture and villages I think nothing can beat the area of Lot and Dordogne which is very scenic and medieval. Uncrowded roads and all the tourists gone home by then. There may be some limited hustle and bustle in Sarlat or Cahors, 2 very interesting cities and there is plenty of Chambre d'hote accommodation at modest price.
However there is always more to do in July and August. In October after the clocks go back most things shut down and we all hibernate for the winter!
