Bee Hunting and Tekking in the forest with Vadda people
Vadha people is the indigenous people of Sri Lanka. They have their own culture. Many legends are connected to their history. That most of the legends says their relationship with the prehistoric human was in the island. Most probably they are descendents from them.
The village Dambana is situated in Mahiyanganaya in Badulla district. In 1970 started the largest, Mahawali river development program. Under that program the Maduru Oya reservoir was built here and the forest around the reservoir was declared as Maduru Oya National Park. The Dambana village also in the park boundary. Government requested them to remove from their lands. But their traditional leader Thisahami refused and protest against government and won their homeland again. But hunting in the jungle is prohibited for them. So they live by farming and helping local and foreign tourists. This village in the jungle is very good for camping. They organize visit to the forest for bee hunting and animal hunting. We also can participate.
Explore Knuckles Forest
Knuckles mountain range and its forest most attractive to explore. It has many nature trails cleared trough the forest by forest department with campsites. For example Mini worlds end trails in the west and east, Pitawala pathena trail, Ash cave trail, Nitre cave trail, Knuckles summit trail are very exciting. Bird Watching in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a country which has 426 birds in avifaunal list. 227 birds are residents to the country while 26 birds are endemic species. 198 species have been recorded as migrants to the country arriving during the Northern winter and so present from August to April. Trekking in Sri Lanka
Trekking, hiking, tramping, bush walking or walking in general is an unlimited and exciting way to explore Nature and Culture in Sri Lanka. Specially is in the central highland and some parts of the surrounding lowland of sri Lanka. The Kandy district has large number of known treks. Within the Kandy city, the short walks, Asgiri Maha Viharaya via Bahirawakanda hill is an interesting. Udawattakelle Forest Reserve is situated within Kandy city limit, gives valuable walking in nature. The other forest reserve in other side of the kandy city has named as Walkers Forest. Enter to upper Hantane trek under special permission from the Municipal Council of Kandy. The famous Western Shrines of Kandy Gadaladeniya, Lankathilake temples and Embakke shrine are connected by a very scenic footpath. Other part of the west of Kandy, a part of Portuguese War Route, via Ihalakotte railway station to Dodanwala Devale shrine is passing forest reserves, Alagalle Mountain, tea estates and kandyan traditional villages. East of Kandy city the temples Gangaramaya, Galmaduwa, Degaldoruwa temple are well known for paintings, sculptures and architectural techniques.

Traditional villages of the Knuckles foothills with so much of treks and short walks such as Last King of Kandy, Sri Wikrama Rajasinhes (1798-1815) hideout place, Rathna Waterfall Trek, Sitakotuwa limestone cave and Garandi Ella waterfall trek etc. Exploring on Water Falls in Sri Lanka and pre historical places, caves and pot holes in Sri Lanka within thick jungles and leading foot paths making trekking possibility.
South of Kandy the longest rice field scenery of the island, Lamasuriyagama Royal Rice Field was belonging to royal court of Kandy a very spectacular trek. It is undisturbed from electricity wires for photographs and with terrace rice fields by a Loggaloya river with watch huts of farmers. Loggaloya riverine forest trail to Victoria-Randenigala-Rantambe sanctuary is also a very interesting trekking.
Horton Plains in Nuwaraelliya district is the only national park to walk. It has three main allowed treks. First and main one is the 8 K. M worlds end-Bakers falls trek. The second highest point in the island Kirigalpotta (2398 M) mountain, third highest Thotupola kanda (2357 M) mountain treks are available for visitors. Around Horton plain Devils Path Trek in lower worlds end is a good experience.
Adam's Peak is the fourth highest peak of Sri Lanka and walking up to the summit from Delhausi is traditional. Delhausi and around has much trekking possibilities. The short walk to Laxapana waterfall, surrounded tea plantations, up to Fishing Hut is for example. The pilgrim path lead to Rathnapura or Kuruwita from the summit is an extra value treks.
While you are traveling in ancient cities of Anuradapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya you can do some hiking and walking in Pidurangala Rock near Sigiriya, trekking in Ritigala Hills, Hiking in Jathika Na Mal Uyana of Pink Quartz Mountain, Visiting Mihintale hills with very special sites.
Mountain Biking in Sri Lanka
Sri lanka is blessed by nature with mountains in the central hills and around surrounded by lowland. From the beginning, British constructed good road system in the hills with greenish environment making the country as a enjoyable mountain biking friendly destination. Mountain biking to the slopes, valleys, tea plantations, terrace rice fields, passing people's home gardens feel you are in a nature paradise. The main mountain biking highlight the island is the Knuckles Mountain Ranges with its verdant hills, birds eye views and challenging trails. It has two parts named as Riverston to the West and Dienston to the east with many suitable biking trails. Riverston mountain biking trail lead to Wasgomuwa National Park. Drive from Raththota road on a vehicle up the hill top in Riverston and direct slope down to Pallegama. Have a bath in the Thelgamu Oya river there and continue the plat road with panoramic views, reservoirs, rice fields and all the way cannel bunts to entrance of the park. Mountain biking in Dinston part of the Knuckles range, drive up to Corbart's gap by a vehicle and start biking all the way down to Mahiyangana passing panoramic views, terrace rice field, Kandyan home gardens, Waterfalls, Victoria Sanctuary. From Mahiyangana, Vadda the Aborigine Village, many hot springs, Rathna waterfall, around Sorabora Lake and along Mahawali River, large Ulhitiya reservoir to see bathing elephants with a binocular.
Around Adam's peak has lots of trails within large tea plantations, reforests of forest department, large reservoirs. From Delhousi up to Maskeliya reservoir passing tea plantations, seven virgin mountain near adam's peak to the Laxapana waterfall is fantastic. From Nuwaraelliya up to Kitulgala, ella, Kandy, Mahiyangana also good down hill biking possibilities with rich nature and the culture. Short destinations from Ella and Kitulgala is also panoramic mountain biking places in the hill country. From Ella to the Highest waterfall Bambarakanda, Little Adam's Peak, passing Ravana Falls to Buduruwagala is very nice.
The lowland is most suitable for cycling. It can be explore and enjoy cycling in ancient cities like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya as well as temples , reservoirs, river valleys, long plat rice fields, For the cyclist in the lowlands and the coastal arias has the opportunity to watch the sunrise and sunset. The lowland is the dry zone but nature given a fantastic drinking option of King Coconut water for you. ('Thambili in Sinhala, is an ideal choice as it is naturally sealed and safe to drink.')
