| About me: | I was the former Airport Manager at BIA, now retired and living in central Kandy. I live along the river Mahaveli, which is the longest river in Sri lanka and about 3 km away from the Kandy town. I have widely traveled in the island as well as in and around Kandy. For the time being I could assist a tourist visiting Kandy to go places of interest, explain the history in English. I am in a position to mail details, photos or any travel details to whoever is interested in touring the island. I would prefer to accompany them to such places on meeting in Kandy. |

Offered Services
bus-traing combined tours
Te Sri lanka transport board operate buses to all most every tourist destination and main cities. The operation is 24 hour service . There are some buses operated with pre-bookings - for long distance destinations. There are also private bus service which is quite efficient. most of the buses are comfortable and air conditioned. some are inter-city services which operates point to point in an express mode. The prices are quite reasonable in both services. If you are interested in changing over from a bus to train you need to check whether the bus terminates or reach a railway station to which you intend traveling.
The railway operates to almost all important destinations. The most interesting route to travel in train is the up country line to hills. You have 2 or 3 classes in train service unlike in buses. Also you can make a booking in trains which has an observation saloon so that you will get a good view of the landscape and travel in comfort. The prices in trains are also quite reasonable.
lodging in the city of Kandy
Kandy is a central location in the central hills of Kandy where it is an ideal city to lodge at the commencement of your tour and plan the balance. The city itself is beautiful with hills right around you and a beautiful lake located at the heart of the town. The town itself is busy therefore it is advised to lodge , little away from the city. Lodging is available from 4 star hotels to guest houses and "live in a house" concept which ranges from 80 or 90 US$ to even as low as 15 to 20 US4. Food of any kind is available in the town as well as in hotels, guest houses and houses . If you name your budget it would be easy to plan your lodging to suite your budget. In the same way , if list your tour plan or the locations interested to visit and the mode of transport required it is once again easy to plan within your budget. The key is to contact the right person to assist and guide you.
organise transportation to areas closer to Kandy
If the city of Kandy is selected as your transit point , you can travel to hill country , north central province to watch ruins, to Minneriya national park to watch elephants and wild life, proceed to Riverstan or Elkaduwa estate for scenic view, Peradeniya for botanical gardens, Pitawalathenne or Hortan plains for foliage and animal species. Also you can complete all the above and select your route down to golden beaches in the Est or the south coast through the highway or take the train.
Trek in udawattekele or off Kandy
Treking could be arranged off Kandy, about 15km from the city, at Alkaduwa estate . A hilly tea estate with beautiful scenery.
walk to preserved forest and along river
A guided tour to the Udawattekale a preserved forest closer to the city and a walk along the river Mahaveli and a walk to a hilly temple and a temple of archeological value.
photos will be added later
walk in and around the city
A guided tour in and around the city .There are many places in and around the city where you can walk through scenic areas. The walk along the river is also not too far from the city where you get the opportunity of elephants bathing , if you are lucky enough. If you start a walk around the Kandy lake, you can descend to the river in 30minutes where a walk along the river could take you down town for about 2 km. If you are tired you have the opportunity to get in to the main road and get in to a bus to head for the town. If not you can continue your trip towards more inland in a coach or a public transport at a low coast.
toruing in the train
guiding and accompanying in the tours to hill country in the train.
Train journey in the upcountry line
Starting from Colombo Fort or can join from Kandy. It goes up to Badulla. Few locations of interest on the way are: Gampola-Ambuluwawa hill, Hatton- Adam’s peak or Sri pada, Ohiya-Hortan plains and world’s end, Hatton- longest tunnel on the way, Ambewela-Milk factory and Newzealand farm, Nanuoya- break off point to Nuwara-eliya, Pattipola-Highest point in the track , Bandarawela- Ella gap, Rawana falls (on the way to Ella—Wellawaya road, Badulla- Dunhinda waterfalls Haputale –Devon falls, Talawakele – Tea Research Institute.
As the train travels in a quite slow speed, you get the opportunity to watch the scenic beauty in both sides of the track. The frequently winding rail track gives ever changing scenes filled with a blanket of mist filled environment. While you could see some of the locations of interest such as Kotmale project, Devon falls etc you need to get off at Ohiya to proceed to Hortan plains while Rawana falls is off Bandarawela-Ella- Wellawaya road.
visit archaeological and religious sites in Kandy
There are many archaeological sites in and around Kandy. The main attraction is the "Temple of tooth" which is called the "Dalada maligawa" giving the meaning of palace of sacred tooth relic. The temple itself is the most holy worshiping temple for Buddhists in the island. Around the palace you can see ruins of palaces and buildings built by ancient kings who had built the palaces. In addition to this there are many old temples with great art peaces, and the museum.
THE FAMOUSE ASALA PERAHARA-
The famouse Kandy perahara or the historical procession ful of cultural items and over 75 elephants participating was over last week. Its time to plan for the next one in 2011 August. Budget living is possible , to watch the procession with a minimum cost and thereafter to continue your tour around Kandy, and to extend it to other parts of this beautiful island. It is the best way to hav a discussion priori to arriving , so that u will be well aware of the situation and what is right and what is wrong. planing a tour well ahead is the best and most economical way .
