The Río Toro explodes with a series of over 45 continuous class 3-4 rapids – you'll spend more than 2½ hours rafting through unexplored, tropical wilderness on a personalized, small-group tour.

Experienced and first-time rafters love the Río Toro for full-day, class 3-4 rafting. The Río Toro offers more continuous rapids along its 16 kilometers of deep-canyon gorges than any other river in Costa Rica. You’ll see waterfalls and abundant wildlife such as sloths, monkeys and tropical birds, including toucans and the Montezuma Oropendula.

leaves at 8:30am from our office in La Fortuna. The Río Toro is the closest class 3-4 river to La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano – only 1 hour away!

Once at the river, our experienced guides will give you a thorough safety talk, get you set up with your helmet, life jacket and paddle and then you're off – you'll be paddling for more than 2½ hours – we'll stop along the way for a nice, tropical fruit break and afterward we take you out for a typical Costa Rican “casado” lunch. You'll return to La Fortuna and the Arenal Area around 3:30-4:00pm (the Río Toro is located only 1 hour from La Fortuna – it is much closer than the Sarapiqui).

Rafters should be ages 13 to 55 and in good physical condition. Although you don't need experience, rafters should know how to swim. Secure shoes and dry clothes to change into.

Please note: if river conditions are unsuitable for the Río Toro, our head guide might make the call to change to a back-up river of equal level and/or offer our half-day whitewater inflatable kayak or raft tour – you're always guaranteed a fun day on the river!

Volunteering at Proyecto Asís

This hands-on one-day volunteer project puts you in direct contact with local fauna and flora in a very down-to-earth environment.

We start with an easy 30-minute orientation walk through secondary rainforest that surrounds the wild animal rescue shelter to get to know the story behind this grassroots endeavor. Proyecto Asis was established about 12 years ago - Proyecto Asis founder Don Jaime del Castillo and his son Alvaro had a dream to turn the once-abandoned farm back into vibrant rainforest while providing a sanctuary for hundreds of species of birds and other wildlife.

You will be put to work feeding a few of the animals such as wild boars, kinkajous, monkeys, caimans & more along the way, plus other helpful activities such as trail repair, cage building, painting, planting trees and more.

Throughout your visit, you'll get a good understanding of how Proyecto Asis works to rehabilitate injured and abandoned animals & release them back to their environment, as well as educational programs underway to help prevent hunting and poaching of the surrounding Children's Eternal Rainforest that connects with Monteverde.

Arenal ATV Tour

After a brief safety talk at our starting point we’ll head to the La Fortuna Waterfall and then to the village of Jauri. Along the way we will travel through farms were you will have the opportunity to see different tropical plants like papaya, yuca and ornamentals. Birdwatching with naturalist guide

It's not unusual to see a Keel-Billed toucan, a Montezuma Oropenula or a Laughing Falcon along the way. For you hard-core birders, we have a special team of birding experts to take you out to some of our favorite spots.

Cerro Chato Extreme Volcano Hike

This is an intense 4-5 hour hike through lush rain forest to the extinct volcano Cerro Chato.

The Liquid Lava Arenal Volcano Guided Hike... You'll hike through lush rainforest near the base of the Arenal Volcano -- one of the most active volcanoes in the world. An experienced naturalist guide will accompany you as you safely explore primary and secondary rainforest and learn about the animals and plants that live there. At the end of the trail is a volcano observation point that offers the nearest possible observation point at the base of Arenal Volcano. After enjoying the sunset, the view becomes even more awesome when on clear nights you can see the lava flow and if you're lucky, you may be able to hear the eruption or the thuds as large lava rocks come tumbling down the side of cone shaped Arenal Volcano.

Get spectacular views of the Arenal Volcano and the green countryside as you travel by horseback for nearly an hour toward the top of the 140-foot Río Fortuna waterfall on nice, big, healthy horses guided by local cowboys. When you reach the entrance of the waterfall, you’ll tie-up your horses and then take a 20-minute hike to the river to cool off in the rushing waters beneath the waterfall. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit! You’ll then hike your way back out of this amazing canyon, change into some dry clothes and then it’s another 45-minute ride back to the stable. Canyoneering in the Lost Canyon with Desafío

Imagine yourself in the midst of thick rainforest at the top of a magical canyon full of tropical waterfalls with surprises each step of the way. This canyon is called the Lost Canyon, because it is so lost, deep in the jungle near the Arenal Volcano.

Your adventure starts as we leave civilization and take our rugged 4x4 vehicles up into the backroads of the Arenal Volcano area. On clear days, we get great views of the Aenal Volcano, the extinct Cerro Chato volcano and the quaint little town of La Fortuna. After a 20 minute ride to our Casa del Cañón, you'll have access to a locker room area to leave your belongings and use the facilities.

You'll be given your high-quality professional canyoneering gear such as your harnesses, helmets and gloves and taken to the starting point of the Lost Canyon for your thorough safety talk.

You'll be rappelling, hiking and down-climbing beautiful tropical waterfalls in a deep pristine jungle canyon. You'll have to use your 5-points of contact -- your hands, feet and bum -- to make your way down the river canyon! You'll encounter the first major waterfall -- over 150-ft high. And the very last waterfall is nearly 200-ft high where we hook you up for an exciting guided rappel. Take a few moments to explore the twin 200-ft waterfall right next to the exit of the Lost Canyon.

Day 2: Caribbean Coast – Samasati Yoga Retreat & Nature Lodge

Breakfast in San Jose, van pickup early morning and transfer to bus station, where we take a public bus ride to the Caribbean Coast (approx. 4 hours). Allowing you to start your trip with a true local experience! Upon arrival at Samasati Yoga Retreat & Nature Lodge: Lunch and free afternoon to explore the area and enjoy of the lodge facilities. Day 5: Arenal/La Fortuna Area – Rancho Margot Organic Farm and Lodge

Morning Yoga Session, Breakfast, Private Van transfer to La Fortuna/Arenal (approx. 5 hours). Upon arrival to La Fortuna and Rancho Margot: Lunch, free afternoon for Optional Activities and to enjoy the lodge facilities. Dinner and then an evening visit to a local Hot Springs & Spa! (give your body a break and some love!). (Vegetarian Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner + Hot Springs included)


Day 6: Arenal/La Fortuna Area – Rancho Margot Organic Farm and Lodge

Morning Yoga Session, Breakfast, free day for Optional Adventure Activities in the area, Lunch, Evening Yoga Session and Dinner. (Vegetarian Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included)


Day 7: Arenal/La Fortuna Area – Rancho Margot Organic Farm and Lodge

Day 8: San Jose – Hotel Don Carlos

Morning Yoga Session, Breakfast (included) Private Van transfer to San Jose, Hotel Don Carlos (approx. 4 hrs). Free afternoon and evening to relax and prepare for your return back Home! Unless you decide to extend your stay for 3 more nights and enjoy the Pacific Coast beach of Manuel Antonio! (See Pacific Coast Extension for details) (Breakfast only included)


Day 9: Departure Day!

Breakfast and then off to the airport to catch your flight. Have a safe flight and PURA VIDA !!!! (Breakfast included)

Beautiful Lake Arenal, at the base of Arenal Volcano, is world-famous for its colorful Rainbow Bass (or Guapote). These hard-fighting fish can reach over 12 pounds, and are excellent eating. The lake also has guapote pinto bass or machaca a smaller member of the Tarpon family that is well known for it’s tremendous fighting ability.

Fish at the base of Arenal volcano, close enough to see and hear lava coming down the side of the mountain! Captain Ron is a seasoned, American fisherman with top-quality gear for conventional, spinner, or fly-fishing. Our Boston Whaler is fully equipped with marine communications, life-vests and safety gear. We welcome novices and children, too!
