I met my Egyptian husband Mohamed on my first trip to Egypt as a tourist. I love to travel and meet people of all sorts and to take photos of the places I travel and the people I meet. I have children still living in Australia so return there regularly. I am lucky enough to have a wonderful view of the pyramids from my house, and so I live with this surviving wonder of the ancient world every day. |

The show is divided into 3 parts. First, a group of performers with an array of instruments from the tabla drums to the oud and ney flute perform a few solos, followed by a vocalist whose appearance signals the end of the first part, or musical interlude. This specific vocalist, officially known as the Muezzin, sings of spirituality, not related to religion only.
The second part of the performance, the Sufi Tannoura Dance (Al Darawish) is derived from the dance performed as a part of a Sufi ritual. The third part incorporates a more spectacular dance, based on showing skills and costume design. Egyptian dancers developed the original sufi dance to make something not related to religion, adding colors and smiles. In Sufi dancing, the dancer must be spinning in a certain direction related to the direction of the sun. One hand must be pointed to the sky and the other to the earth. The atmosphere is different for the two sections of the performance.
At the conclusion of the show you will have a little time to look around the Wekalet and browse the gift shop (if it is open) and then you will be returned to your hotel.
This show is available with or without dinner included. Please specify when booking as it will alter costs, tour duration and pick up times.

The Fayoum is located less than a hundred kilometers from Cairo and with its heritage of flora and archaeology, is one of the most beautiful and interesting regions of Egypt. It is a vast depression of about 18,000 square kilometers, originally a huge swamp fed by the Nile, with luxuriant vegetation and numerous animals, including many crocodiles. Human intervention, beginning in the Middle Kingdom (ca 2100 to 1750 BC), profoundly modified the natural environment, making it suitable for the development of agriculture, which reached its peak in the Ptolemaic and Roman eras. However you can still see a great deal of farming life today, including the use of the famous shadouf and water wheels to distribute water. Also the Fayoum is partly an environmental reserve, growing native flora of forest trees and shrubs, and has excellent bird-watching opportunities. The Fayoum also has an incredible fossil reserve known as the Sea of Whales where you can see the fossilized whale skeletons in the sand. This trip however, requires a 4WD and is not included today.
We will visit the great lake called Birket Qaroun which means "Lake of Horns", which is home to a great many birds, including flamingoes in breeding season. Lake Qaroun is a popular swimming and relaxation destination for Cairenes in summer.
Al – Fayoum is also rich in ancient Egyptian pyramids, including the pyramids of Fayoum, the pyramids of al-Lahun and the pyramids of Hawara. As well there are monuments of other eras of Egyptian history, such as monasteries and temples, and the famous Fayoum portraits which date back to Graeco-Roman times, a number of which are on display at the Egyptian Museum. You will see one at the small museum at Kom Oshim.
Finally you can enjoy the most interesting valley of Wadi-El Rayan where you can delight in the cataract and natural sightseeing, including taking a small boat ride in the Nile, getting a special cataract view.
Our tour will start at 7 am at your accommodation and we’ll have you back safe and sound a bit more than 12 hours later, depending on exactly what you see and how long you wish to linger at some of the sites, and the traffic of course. Bird watching, Egypt
The Fayoum is well regarded for its bird life, as the marshy areas, lake and farmlands provide rich feeding grounds for water birds and more. Local guides can lead you to just the right places for great photos and bird sightings.
Near the springs of Wadi el Rayan it is not uncommon to come across the small desert wheatear, or maybe the hoopoe lark standing on a small hillock. In late autumn the migration of the Barbary falcons can be observed, while around the lakes the majority of almost 200 species of birds included in the Wadi-el-Rayan census can be found. In spring many species nest and feed around Lake Qarun, including the greater and lesser flamingoes and other wader species.

Around ten centuries ago El Mui'z li Din Allah was the principal street in Cairo. It is named after the Fatimid ruler who conquered Cairo in 969 AD. El Mui'z Street was the main road through the city in this period when people would access the city through Bab Zuweila in the south and through Bab El Futuh in the north. Over the centuries many buildings have been constructed on this street and of course, it is no longer a central street in Cairo. It is very narrow and one of the city’s most historical streets; indeed it is Cairo's largest open-air museum of Islamic and medieval monuments and buildings.
On your walking tour from one gate to the other you will see so many fabulous buildings and sites. You will begin at Bab Zuweila and then next door see the Mosque of Sultan Mu'ayyad, which was built in 1415. There’s an excellent view of the city from the minaret of this mosque. You’ll pass through the Wakala of Ghouri, which is a large market that mainly specializes in products made of cloth with many shops that sell colourful pieces of cloth of different materials. This is in addition to the traditional souvenir and gift shops. You will also see the Wekalet el Ghouri which is now a cultural centre but is one of the last 17th century wekalet (or caravanseri) in Cairo. You’ll see the Mosque of Al Azhar, on the other side of the street there is the Saydena El Hussein Mosque. It was built in 1870 and it replaced another mosque of the 12th century. Next to it is Khan il Khalili bazaar, Al Sagha, which means 'the gold sellers', bazaar, and the area of Bein El Qasrein, and the Madrassa and Mausoleum of Sultan Qalawun. If time permits you also see the Beshtak Palace.
Naghuib Mahfouz, the famous Egyptian author who won the Nobel Literature Prize in 1988, used to live in this area. Most of his writings were inspired by the place and the first novel of the Cairo Trilogy, the famous Egyptian novels, was even called Bein El Qasrein after this area.
You will continue walking passing many historic houses and mosques, ending your walk finally at the Bab El Nasr.
NB – Dependent on the day and start time you may undertake this walk in the opposite direction.
You will wander through the streets, view the sites from outside, and enter the ones you feel attracted to. During this fascinating walk in Mui'z Street, it is great to freshen up in the El Fishawy Café, the most famous café in Khan il Khalili, where Naguib Mahfouz frequently sat. Lunch will be a traditional koshery meal.
Duration
8 hours approx. (will vary a little dependent on how long you might like to linger as well as the Cairo traffic). The tour operates daily at all times of the year. You can even cruise for a couple of days, enjoying a real sailing holiday. Enjoy the crystal blue water and the glorious sunshine, or have the wait staff bring you your drink or lunch under your umbrella. Talk to the aimals, Egypt
Egypt has 8 zoos, the largest of which are the Giza Zoo in Cairo and the zoo in Alexandria. The Giza Zoo, established in 1891, is on the grounds of a former palace and close to the Nile with the northern tip overlooking Cairo University. Covering an area of almost 100 acres and hemmed in by high rise buildings and traffic-choked roads, the zoo is beginning a program of refurbishment and reform after some difficult years.
Packed with a wide variety of species of fauna and flora, the zoo retains some of its original structures, including an iron suspension bridge designed by Eiffel. A very low admission price ensures that the zoo has around 10 million visitors each year.
Other Egyptian zoos are:
Tanta Zoo, El Gharbeya
El Sharkia Zoo, El Sharkeyah
El Arish Zoo (North Sinai)
Beni Suef Zoo
El Faiyoum Zoo, Faiyoum
Alexandria Zoo
There is also an aquarium at Hurghada and a dolphin attraction in 6th October City.
If you are on a family holiday or animals are your area of interest we can help plan an itinerary that includes whichever of Egypt's zoos you are interested in visiting.
Take a car and driver, Egypt
If you don't want to brave the taxis or public transport of Cairo or other areas of Egypt, and you either have some free time from your tour, or you are making your own tour, we can provide you with a car and driver to show you the sights of Cairo or to take you out of the city to another location. Feel really special and make sure that you are seeing exactly what you want to see. Ideal if you are a keen photographer and need to stop when you see the shot!

Step through time in Egypt
Of course everyone knows about the many Pharaonic monuments in Egypt, but Egypt also has a long history after the last dynasty fell. There are many interesting things to see from the Roman ruins in north, including Cleopatra's Bath, the Christian history embodied in many of the sites in Coptic Cairo and other places (remember the flight of the Holy family to and from Egypt)and the long and preserved history of Muslim Cairo that is still enshrined in many of the old mosques, the narrow and winding alleys and the City of the Dead in Old Cairo. You can also visit the World War II sites in the north such as El Alamein. If it's history you are after then Egypt should be your destination. We can design a tour based on your own particular interests or we have a variety of ready-made excursions and tours. Just ask us.
A taste of culture

Price:
Egypt offers a variety of cultural experiences including the formal at venues such as the Opera House or the Balloon Theatre, and the less formal at the many cafes and restaurants. You can also have a longer "cultural" experience with some of Egypt's minority peoples such as the Bedouin or the Nubians. A lengthier experience will take more planning and time away from the capital, while a theatre or gallery visit, or taking in a musical performance, can be arranged in Cairo and at shorter notice. Add a different dimension to your Egyptian holiday.
