Počitelj UNESCO heritage

A great D-tour on your way to the coast or to Hutovo blato, this quaint oriental-style town is located about half an hour's drive from Mostar, less than 30km south on the M-17 road towards the Adriatic.

This unique settlement, listed as a UNESCO heritage site and recent reconstruction has returned the town to its original form. Besides its stunning oriental architecture and Ottoman feel, Pocitelj hosts the longest operating art colony in southeast Europe.

Artists from around the world gather here to paint, among other things but importantly, the shiny red pomegranates and figs that grow in abundance on the hills of Pocitelj.

The Hadzi-Alija Mosque has been reconstructed as well as the Sisman-Ibrahimpasina medresa and the Gavran Kapetanovic house, all of which are open to visitors. The most striking object in Pocitelj is the Sahat-kula, a silo-shaped fort that towers from the top of the hill above the town. It housed watchmen and military to guard against possible invasion from the Neretva Valley.

Hutovo blato Bird Reserve is marshland, created by the underground aquifer system of the Krupa River. It is fed from the limestone massif of Ostrvo that divides the Deransko and Svitavsko lakes.
The International Council for Bird Protection placed this reserve on the list of important bird habitats, and did so for good reasons: this reserve is the largest of its kind in this part of Europe, in terms of both size and diversity. It is home to over 240 types of migratory birds and dozens that make their permanent home in these sub-Mediterranean wetlands surrounding Deransko Lake. In the migration season, tens of thousands of birds fill this lake and its surroundings.

The best way to see these birds is to rent a boat, which can be done from the reserve's only hotel. Per hour, these 'barcos' cost 40KM (for up to six persons), 60KM (for up to ten persons) or 100KM (for ten to 15 persons). They come with a professional biologist guide, who speaks English and takes an additional 30KM.

The reserve provides a unique oasis amongst the harsh arid karst of western Herzegovina. Teeming with freshwater fish, wild duck, geese, coots, hawks, herons, pheasants, wild boar and wild horses, it accommodates birdwatchers, nature lovers and families with children alike. For the latter, there is a very short but cute educational walk that starts from the hotel.

Hutovo blato is located only 5km from the city of Capljina and is marked with clear signs on the M-17. There is no entrance fee to the park and it is open all year round. It also has a picnic area, restaurant/café and a newly renovated hotel.

Forest & Rainforest Tours
width= Bosnian Travel Adventures: Hiking The Mountains in Bosnia

Bosnia is not the first place you might be thinking about as a hiking destination, given the history of violence during the break-up of the Republic of Yugoslavia, and how Sarajevo is synonymous with the word "sniper" (and Hillary Clinton's courage under fire), but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that recently a world of hiking opportunities have opened up in some of the most unspoiled and naturally beautiful mountain ranges in all of Europe. Compared to the over-run coastal throngs of Croatia and Montenegro, Bosnian hiking offers inland adventures that Tourist have been slow to discover, but continental hikers have known about for years. Hiking in Bosnia this summer is a viable and affordable option for experienced hikers and new enthusiasts alike. As a long-time lover of the Maglič hike, I'd highly recommend trying it out!

Bosnian Travel Adventures: Hiking The Mountains in Bosnia
With unparalleled views into a unique, distinct mountain village culture, very few other hikers, gorgeous forests and mountains ranging from low-elevation to Maglic, a 7,828 foot peak, and the highest in Bosnia & Herzegovina, the hiking opportunities are unparalleled.

Backpacking
width= Backpacking in Konjic Bosnia and Herzegovina

Konjic is attractive far more by its abundance of natural beauty that completely surrounds the town. The Neretva River running through the centre and Prenj Mountain hovering behind dominate Konjic.
The old town is quite nice to stroll through. The center of town is rather pleasant too, with stunning views in every direction. The main street is often closed to vehicle traffic and is filled with the young and old walking, hanging out in café's or selling their wares along the riverside markets. People in Konjic are very easy going and friendly so feel free to ask someone for directions or to engage in some small talk. Since the early 1900s, Konjic has come to be known for its woodcarvers. The craft developed a commercial dimension during the Austro-Hungarian occupation in the early 20th century. Before World War II Konjic had a couple of dozen woodcarving businesses, who sold their elaborately-carved heirloom furniture and boxes within the Austro-Hungarian empire and beyond.

The Niksic family is one of the few families left that continue to pass on the family trade from father to son. They now have two shops located next to each other: Brothers Niksic and Rukotvorine Their work is mainly done in European walnut, cherry, and maple. Most of their products are custom-made to order. The epicenter of the Konjic tourism offer is most certainly the area around Boracko Lake and the valley of Glaveticevo. This partial glacier lake has bungalows, a hotel and camping facilities. Most of the outdoor activities begin from this region: hiking, camping, rafting, kayaking, village tourism, canoeing, mountain biking and even paragliding.

BORACKO LAKE

Real adventure awaits you over the mountaintop near Boracko Lake. To get there, just follow the signs for 'rafting' up the long and winding mountain road.

It takes about half an hour to travel up and over the mountain. Boracko Glacier Lake is snuggled in between Prenj, Bjelasnica and Visocica mountains. The lake is open to the public for camping, swimming and BBQs. The best spot is across the lake by the restaurant where you will find a great freshwater stream and plenty of shade.

Archeological museum in francisian monastery.
Fojnica is a small, picturesque town in Central Bosnia. It is famous for its hill-top 700-year-old "Holy Spirit" Franciscan Monastery, which houses an important part of Bosnia's cultural heritage. Ottoman documents say that Fojnica had both a church and monastery at the time of the medieval Bosnian kings.

The Monastery has re-opened its library containing about 50,000 books after eight years of reconstruction. The library's archive holds more than 3,000 documents from the time of the Ottoman Empire. The museum also houses the "Book of Coats of Arms", dating from 1304 - probably one of the oldest books in the region - with historical coats of arms of Balkan countries and of prominent Bosnian families...

Archaeological Tours
width= Archaeological Tours in Vjeternica Cave

Description

Vjeternica (which means 'wind cave') is the largest cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the warmer parts of the year a cold air blows from its entrance. The cave has been explored and described to a total of about 6.1 thousand meters in length; of this the main canal is about 2.47 thousand metres long (from the edge of Popovo polje to the south). There are several permanent and occasional streams, and lakes, which the largest is about 180 m long. There are many stalactites, flowstone, draperies, cascades and others forms. In terms of its biological diversity it is one of the richest caves in the world. It is officially in second place, with 85 troglobionates. The remains of eight fossilised animals have bee found in it, the largest being the cave bear (Carnivoria, Ursus spelacus) and one comlete skeleton of leopard (Carnivoria, Panthera pardus). On the rocks at the entrance to the cave there are two carved stones, typical for Medieval tombstones in the region. In a scientific sense, Vjetrenica has been the site of many different forms of research, which may be traced back to the 16th century. Pliny the Elder in his work 'Historia naturalis' mentions a nameless cave from which a strong whirlwind blows, and he was actully referring to Vjeternica. Vjeternica has been visited by thousands of tourists.
300 metres SE of village Zavala, Ravno Municipal, west end of Popovo polje, 15 km NE of Slano on Adriatic coast (Republic of Croatia), 25 km NW of Dubrovnik.

Fishing & Fly Fishing
width= Fishing & Fly Fishing in Konjic, River Neretva

Neretva is a river in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The total length is 225 km, of which 203 km in Herzegovina, while the final 22 km are in the Dubrovnik-Neretva county of Croatia.

The upper stream of Neretva has water of Class A purity and is almost certainly the coldest river water in the world, often as low as 7-8 degrees Celsius in the summer months. Neretva also has some endemic and very delicate, fragile life forms that are near extinction.

Neretva originates deep in the Dinaric Alps and flows through them creating a large gorge. It eventually expands into a wide valley which provides valuable agricultural land. There exists a large accumulation lake near Jablanica, created on the Neretva and at least three hydroelectric dams between Jablanica and Mostar.

The Bosnian government has recently made serious plans to allow foreign investors to build several more dams in upper stream and destroy the canyon by flooding it. This is protested by environmentalists who wish for the canyon, considered at least as beautiful as the Tara canyon in the nearby Montenegro, to remain untouched as it has so far.

The smaller rivers of Rakitnica, Rama and Trebižat flow into Neretva from the right, while Buna and Bregava flow into it from the left. The last 30 km of Neretva's stream form an alluvial delta, before the river empties into the Adriatic Sea.

The biggest city on the Neretva is Mostar. Other towns on the Neretva include Konjic, Jablanica, Čapljina, Metković as well as the historical village of Počitelj.

The upper part of river Neretva Valley is some 600 meters deep and in its upper part is called Borač, while the lower part (near Rama debauchment) is called Župa. Al the way to Rama debauchment, Neretva flows north-west, but when it takes this tributary it suddenly turns towards south.

In the upper part of the river, upstream from Konjic, we can find trout, Adriatic trouts, Salmo Marmoratus, grayling, Eurasian minnow and freshwater crab. Although the river is frequently spawn, Adriatic trout and Salmo Marmoratus are close to extinction and the entire fish fund is a lot poorer then five or six years ago.

In the lower part of the river, except of the fish we already mentioned, one can find, California trout, Leuciscus svallize, European Chub, common carp, eel, Alburnus arborella, while in lakes we can find Prussian carp, Zander, lake trout, charr and in the past few years, chubs and Pumpkinseeds can also be found. Main tributaries are: Rakitnica, Rama, Buna, Bregava, Trebižat...

Fishing licence 25 Euro par day, for each pearson.

Cave Tours
width= Vjetrenica Cave Tours in Herzegovina

In the southwestern no-man’s land of Herzegovina is the stunning valley of Popovo Polje. The ancient karst field is a minute piece of what is the one of the world’s largest karst field that stretches all the way into Croatia and Slovenia.

Near the small town of Ravno and the medieval orthodox monastery of Zavala is the largest cave system discovered in Bosnia and Herzegovina – Vjetrenica Caves. This extensive cave system has in total over 6 kilometres of chanels. The stunning Main chanel stretches on 2,50 kilometers.

Amongst the many archeological discoveries are the ancient cave bears and leopards, cave drawings that are estimated to be over 10,000 years old . The Cave is also home to many small lakes and endemic types of shellfish only found in deep underground aquifer systems.

Vjetrenica is now on the list for Unesco protected areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cave has recently been re-opened after extensive research and improvements to the infrastructure. Opening hours vary so it is advisable that travelers check with local travel agencies before visiting the site. Well marked road signs are visible throughout the main Popovo Polje road from Stolac to Trebinje and from the main coastal road in Croatia towards Ravno.
