Scarisoara cave is famous due to the presence of a 3000 years old glacier which covers an aria of 5500 square meters and a volume of 55000 cubic meters.

The ice sheet can reach in some spots about 20 m. The shallow-hole from the entrance is 50 m deep and 57 m in diameter. The cave presents calcareous concretions and also icy stalagmites. Inside the ice was discovered a Chamois skeleton.

The cave is situated in the SW of the Rodnei Mountains, on the left side of the Izvorul Tausoarelor Valley (affluent of the Gersa Valley), near by the Bârlea Massif, at an altitude of 965 m. The access to the cave from Rebrisora Village to Gersa Valley (about 26 km).

The cavity is a karstic catchment for the waters of the Izvorul Tausoarelor Valley, which are lost to the underground on a lenght of 300 m upstream of the entrance of the cave, on the left side of the brook. The outlet spring of the four underground brooks (from the Advance Gallery, the Mountain Room, the Belgians Gallery and the Gypsum Gallery) is situated at a distance of 4,8 km at the Rece Spring.

Being declarated as Natural Monument the cave is closed. For visiting the cave, an approval from "Emil Racovita" Speleological Institute from Cluj-Napoca is required, and a guide. We can arrange all for you.
