About me: I am a German living in Tanzania since 1992. Beeing married to a Tanzanian, we have one daughter. I love the country of Tanzania, especially the Usambara Mountains, where we live and run a local guesthouse, as well as a languageschool for Kiswahili. Backpacking Hikers´s heaven in the Usambara Mountains

The Usambara Mountains are truly hiker`s heaven with all the natural beauty imaginable to see and welcoming people to meet. There are roads and good path leading nearly everywhere, and – although much of the walking is at elevations from 5000 to 7000 feet – the climbs are rarely demanding.
The Usambara Mountains Tourism Programme offers a number of standard walking tours, that accommodate different interests, time schedules, and physical capabilities. These tours range from a few hours to a few days. The Usambaras as well offer great possibilities for mountain biking and even car safaris since the roads through the mountains are generally good. However, you can plan your own tour, just discuss your interest with us and the tour will be customized for you.

The Usambara are considerably older than Mts. Kilimanjaro and Meru. Through the mountains were thrust upwards around 25 million years ago, the rock which forms the mountains is at least 600 million years old.

The Usambaras have many unique plant species, and are the source of the world-famous Usambara or African violet.The Usambaras have abundant and diverse bird life, and according to experts, is one of the best places in Africa for bird watching.
Lushoto District - long famous for its fruits and vegetables- , produces most of Tanzanian`s plums and pears, and much of the salad greens and vegetables used by Dar´s top hotels and restaurants come from Lushoto. Almost all visitors to the Usambaras return with a mental book of lovely memories; many come back wth a slew of photographs; some come away with locally made handicrafts or artwork.
