WaterFire in WaterPlace Park
3 Recommendations: 3 Favorable,
Being at WaterFire is like stepping into another world. Try to arrive in time for the lighting of the braziers and the accompanying theatrics. Give yourself several hours to walk along the length of the river and soak up the cracking sound and aroma of the woodfire and listen to the music (i.e., world music in minor key). Need weeks in advance for dinner reservations that overlook Waterfire but can find inexpensive food along the route. Can purchase tickets for a gondola ride as well. Among the top 5 events in Rhode Island.

Narragansett Beach, RI
3 Recommendations: 3 Favorable,
Narragansett Beach is one of the most popular beaches in RI's large expanse of shoreline. This is so because the beach features a long and wide berth of sand on which to sun bath. The beach is clean, being combed daily during the season. There are rock outcroppings on which to walk out into the ocean. The beach features 2 Pavilions, cabanas, showers and bathrooms. And a beachfront club house is available to rent.

Prospect Terrace Park
3 Recommendations: 3 Favorable,
Looking out from Prospect Terrace Park, one has an extraordinary birds eye view of the downtown part of Providence. This is a small, but well acquainted park, close to both RISD and Brown on the East side of Providence, sitting above the city.

Hemenway's Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar
2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,
A wonderful place to dine in comfort and style. Friendly staff and fresh food from many local farms. The fish is fresh from the local waters right close by. Now there are 2 Hemingways, one in Providence and the other in East Greenwich. And while you are at it, stay around Providence and check out Waterfire if it is taking place that night.

Roger Williams Park Zoo
2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,
I love to go to the park and the zoo is great. Over the last 30 years, the Society has worked with the City, Parks Department and zoo staff to help make Roger Williams Park Zoo one of the finest zoological parks in the nation. As the zoo's ambassador, it has effectively communicated the zoo's mission statement of recreation, education, conservation and research. The funds it has raised have created important exhibits, making Roger Williams Park Zoo one of the few nationally prominent zoos in the Northeast. It has successfully generated tremendous enthusiasm for the zoo, and in so doing has increased public awareness of our precious wildlife resources and the need to protect them.

University of Rhode Island
2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,
The Annual Summer Chamber Music Festival occurs at the University's Fine Arts Center during the month of July. There are Carnegie Hall level concerts at very reasonable prices. The festival began about 20 years ago by the talented son of a URI professor, David Kim, currently the concert master of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Talented pianist, Natalie Zhu has taken on the leadership the past year and continues to bring exciting, young musicians, many of whom are graduates of the Curtis Institute. The Newport Music Festival is more famous, given its location in various mansions throughout Newport, but the Kingston Chamber Concert musicians are at least as talented.

Block Island, Rhode Island
2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,
My husband and I have come to the 1661 almost annually for over 15 years. The rooms are spacious (even some with jacuzzis) but you will probably want to remain outdoors as much as possible. After a sumptuous breakfast included in the price (which we eat towards the end of the morning so it serves as a brunch), you may sit outside on chairs and watch the active bird life with the backdrop of the ocean or take a walk along the road and look for seals. It's best if you just leave your car at the ferry and take bikes. The inn is a short ride/walk from the ferry, though once there, it creates the sense of being in a private resort. There are beautiful country roads to bike along (if a bit hilly - I walk on the challenging slopes). Then enjoy the long ride downhill to the beach to sun and explore. The water is too chilly for swimming during the offseason (when we typically visit) but may heat up during July, August. There are also several festivals during the tourist season on Block Island. The inn, built around 1870 is within walking distance of the town and offers many spectacular scenic overlooks. There is even a farm across the road that houses unusual animals - emus, various species of goats (the fainting goat, for one). They continue to build their menagerie. Herbs and vegetables used in the meals are grown in the nearby garden. The Abrams family have been the managers of the inn and Rita Draper (Abrams) is a most congenial hostess, joining guests during the afternoon "nibble" hour that goes well beyond cheese and crackers. They also have a tour of the island beginning at the 1661 which offers an overview of the history, geography and culture of Block Island. Avid orinthologists descend upon Block Island during specific times of the year, so bring binoculars if you're so inclined to bird watch. We've discovered Block Island is home to many aspiring poets from a visit during April, Poetry month, where guest poets (we heard Mary Oliver and Coleman Barks one year - spectacular!) lead visitors into inspirational exercises to attract the muse. The scenery in Block Island offers an ongoing source of inspiration. Take ginger root supplements to manage seasickness from the ferry; waters can be rough sometimes. Traveling across water does give the sense of truly being away. Bon Voyage!

Rue De L'espoir
2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,
Rue De L'espoir is one of the oldest restaurants in Rhode Island. It has changed fares over the years as can be expected, but the quality has remained always top notch. Starting out with french cuisine it is now a great mix of french, american, asian with a splash of greek thrown in for good measure. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. And the brunch on Sundays is fantastic.
