Rubondo Island National Park

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Rubondo Island is tucked in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, the world's second-largest lake, an inland sea sprawling between Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. With nine smaller islands under its wing, Rubondo protects precious fish breeding grounds.Tasty tilapia form the staple diet of the yellow-spotted otters that frolic in the island’s rocky coves, while rapacious Nile perch, some weighing more than 100kg, tempt recreational game fishermen seeking world record catches.Rubondo is more than a water wonderland. Deserted sandy beaches nestle against a cloak of virgin forest, where dappled bushback move fleet yet silent through a maze of tamarinds, wild palms, and sycamore figs strung with a cage of trailing taproots. The shaggy-coated aquatic sitatunga, elsewhere the most elusive of antelopes, is remarkably easily observed, not only in the papyrus swamps it normally inhabits, but also in the forest interior.Birds are everywhere.Flocks of African grey parrots – released onto the island after they were confiscated from illegal exporters – screech in comic discord as they flap furiously between the trees.

Gombe National Park

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Gombe is the smallest of Tanzania's national parks: a fragile strip of chimpanzee habitat straddling the steep slopes and river valleys that hem in the sandy northern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Its chimpanzees – habituated to human visitors – were made famous by the pioneering work of Jane Goodall, who in 1960 founded a behavioural research program that now stands as the longest-running study of its kind in the world. The matriarch Fifi, the last surviving member of the original community, only three-years old when Goodall first set foot in Gombe, is still regularly seen by visitors. Chimpanzees share about 98% of their genes with humans, and no scientific expertise is required to distinguish between the individual repertoires of pants, hoots and screams that define the celebrities, the powerbrokers, and the supporting characters. Perhaps you will see a flicker of understanding when you look into a chimp's eyes, assessing you in return - a look of apparent recognition across the narrowest of species barriers. The most visible of Gombes other mammals are also primates. A troop of beachcomber olive baboons, under study since the 1960s, is exceptionally habituated, while red-tailed and red colobus monkeys - the latter regularly hunted by chimps – stick to the forest canopy. The park’s 200-odd bird species range from the iconic fish eagle to the jewel-like Peter’s twinspots that hop tamely around the visitors’ centre. After dusk, a dazzling night sky is complemented by the lanterns of hundreds of small wooden boats, bobbing on the lake like a sprawling city.

Mahale Mountain National Park

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa, the Mahale Mountains National Park was gazetted in 1985, covers an area of 1 613 km² and is located about 128 km south of Kigoma town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The western boundary of the park protects an adjacent 1.6 km wide strip of Lake Tanganyika’s waters. The land in and around Mahale is the traditional homeland of the Watongwe and Waholoholo tribes. Japanese primate researchers began exploring along the shore of Lake Tanganyika, south of Kigoma as early as 1961. In 1965, the researchers established their first camp, ‘Kansyana’, in Mahale and began habituating chimpanzees. The terrain is mostly rugged and hilly, and is dominated by the Mahale Mountains chain that runs from the northwest to the southeast across the park. The highest peak (Mount Nkungwe) rises to 2 462 m above sea level.Tourist Attractions Mahale offers a number of outstanding attractions for visitors, from tracking wild habituated chimpanzees, to mountain climbing, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking and relaxing on deserted, pristine, white, sandy beaches. Walking safaris in the beautiful, lowland forest allow close encounters with a vast array of birds and animals, including a group of habituated chimpanzees. The opportunity to track chimps in their natural habitat is Mahale's foremost tourist attraction. * An ascent of the highest peak in the Mahale Mountains ridge, Mt. Nkungwe, is one of the most spectacular activities available to tourists. It takes 2-3 days to reach the summit, and the best time for climbing is during the dry season (May – October). Whilst camping on the mountain at night, it is often possible to see the spectacle of 'fishing fire', as the kerosene lamps carried by small fishing boats light up across the Lake. * Lake Tanganyika contains more than 250 species of fish found nowhere else on Earth, many of which can be viewed by snorkelling in the shallows along Mahale’s shoreline. * Long walking trips can be arranged for viewing big game such as lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe and leopard. These safaris may require up to 7 days. * Sport fishing on the fresh waters of Lake Tanganyika is possible under special licences available to visitors. * Cultural tourism activities entailing visits to the nearby villages can also be arranged. Kigoma town and the historical town Ujiji are worth a detour. Kigoma is the capital of the Kigoma District .

Mkomazi-Umba Game Reserve

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Mkomazi is increasingly becoming famous to tourists who visit Tanzania. With Kenya's Tsavo National Park comprises a single unique ecological unit, which forms the most important Savannah vegetation in Africa. It is also believed that large animals which are found in Tsavo reside in this park too and provide seasonal refuges for many species of large mammals and migrant birds. It has a great biological significance, representing species and ecosystems not commonly found elsewhere in East Africa. The reserve covers an area of 3,701 km sq. along the Kenya-Tanzanian border, between Kilimanjaro and the coast, North of Tanga. Mkomazi lies at the southern extremity of the great arc of semi-arid savanna, the Sahel, into which many Somalian species of plants and animals are funneled, but beyond which they are unable to extend their range, concentrating species diversity, and making the area as one of the richest savannas in Africa. It is the home of Mkomazi Rhinos Project, a project to relocated black rhinos from South Africa to Mkomazi Game Reserve and Ngorongoro. Its goal is community based wildlife management; a program aimed at educating communities on the benefits of wildlife. The project is run by Tanzania Wildlife Protection Fund. The reserve harbour more than 78 species of wildlife including elephant, hartebeest, zebra, giraffe, gazelle, steenbok, and shy aardwolf. Mkomazi has also an approximately 450 species of birds, which make it a paradise for ornithologists these are the main routes which are used by trekkers to reach the top or descending. The wilderness and dense vegetation nature of this game reserve is ideal for hiking and walking safari. While walking or hiking you will have the chance to see re-introduced African hunting dogs and other big mammals. It is a paradise for bird lovers, birds like Shelly's Starling, Fisher's Starling, Somali Long-billed Crombec Carmine Bee-eaters, and Spotted Redshank are commonly seen.

Mosque St

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

As such, Arusha's streets are chockablock with buses, safari vans and giant SUVs owned by flush tour operators. And hungry pedestrians in transit. One enterprise that has embraced this situation with some delicious genius is wheeler mealer Zubeda Auto Spares / Khan's Barbeque. By day, it sells auto parts to vehicles trundling through town. By night, it sells some of the best damn Pakistani-style BBQ chicken parts I've tasted anywhere for the travellers pouring out of said vehicles. Slot yourself into one of the long bench tables (or simply lower your SUV window if you want to eat in your plush vehicle), place your order, then go build your own salad that comes with each meal. I particularly liked the green tomato achar (pickle) salad. Khan's Barbeque / Zubeda Auto Spares Mosque St Arusha, Tanzania +255 27 2500 458 / 2544 925 Mobile: +255 713 / 754 / 784 652747
