Serengeti National Park

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

This is Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th world wide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.

Serengeti National Park

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

The name comes from the Maasai 'siringet' which means ' endless plains', and the Serengeti is just that. Within its 14,763 square kilometers (5,000 square mile) dwell an estimated 3 million large animals - this is one of the world's last great wildlife sanctuaries. It is from here that the famous army of grazers begins its legendary trek in search of new grazing lands. The best time to see heavy concentration of game is between January and February. Life on the Serengeti is a complex cycle, the defining factor of which is the rain. Though the precise timing varies each year, it usually occurs around May. The columns of herbivores stretch up to forty kilometers long (25 miles ) as they make their way up north toward Kenya's Maasai Mara from where they eventually return some eight and a half months later. Packs of wild dog usually follow, preying on the sick and weak .

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Set high on the saddle of a tree-clad ridge, commanding panoramic views across the Serengeti, this lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class style. Winner of numerous awards from the world travel press, it is perhaps the finest venue the Serengeti has to offer.Centrally located adjacent to the famous Western Corridor and Grumeti River, the lodge has been designed to blend completely into the living landscape. A series of traditional domed ‘rondavels' are widely spaced throughout the grounds, which are cooled by groves of acacia trees and watered by sparkling streams. On the very edge of the ridge is a ‘vanishing horizon' pool, which looks out over the ‘endless plains' after which the Serengeti is named.Situated close to the world-famous 2-million-year-old paleolithic site of Ol Duvai, ‘birthplace of mankind', the lodge has been styled to offer a showcase of cultural performance, heritage and traditional art, which is best illustrated by the lavish Makonde carvings which decorate both the rooms and the stunning domed dining room.

Olakira Camp

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Olakira Camp is a classic, mobile safari camp that moves between the southern and central Serengeti, attempting to stay close to the Migration from December to June, through pre-planned moves (the northern Serengeti, where the Migration typically wanders around from mid July to November, is covered by its sister camp Sayari Camp). 'Olakira' means 'star' in the Maasai language.Typically, the camp will be in the Ndutu area from mid-December to March in order to witness the magical calving season of the wildebeest in the southern Serengeti. From June onward, the camp moves north to follow the Migration, staying in the central Serengeti for the rest of the season. These move patterns are subject to change, as the philosophy behind the camp is to be as close to the action as possible.A stay in Olakira Camp is not about 5 star luxury though; it's about something more than that. Being in the middle of this wonderful spectacle, with wild animals roaming around camp at night, is a dream come true to even the most experienced of travelers.

The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. But there is more to Serengeti than large mammals. Gaudy agama lizards and rock hyraxes scuffle around the surfaces of the park’s isolated granite koppies. A full 100 varieties of dung beetle have been recorded, as have 500-plus bird species, ranging from the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland, to the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills. As enduring as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterises the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust. Popular the Serengeti might be, but it remains so vast that you may be the only human audience when a pride of lions masterminds a siege, focussed unswervingly on its next meal.
