Piekny Pies

3 Recommendations: 3 Favorable,

You won't see this club's advertisements or billboards or not even every Cracovian will recognise the name (which in translation means 'beautiful dog'). This place was created by an artist for other bohemian artists entourage, never meant to be a typical public bar, yet its marvellous, unique atmosphere makes it full of people almost every time of day (and especially night). Open till the last customer (which practically means, open all-day-long) offers a bar and lounge upstairs and mostly funk & soul music and dancefloor downstairs. Bearing in mind the price of a vodka shot (about 1 dollar) you shall consider a massive hangover the next day. but definitely worth it.

The Liban Quarry

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

One of the most forgotten places in Krakow but still living its own life. the Liban Quarry should first and foremost be a place of remembrance for the victims of the Nazi labour camp that operated here during Kraków's WWII occupation. Incredible limestone cliffs, ponds and dense vegetation are as breath-taking as the rusting refinery equipment, fenceposts, gravestones and tangles of barbed wire that can still be found amongst the brush here. The limestone company 'Liban and Ehrenpreis,' run by two well-known Jewish industrial families from Podgórze, established a quarry here in 1873. By the end of the 19th century a complex of buildings was established within the quarry and a railway line laid as the families enjoyed an excellent reputation locally and abroad. However, during Nazi occupation, Liban was set-up as a cruel penal camp where 800 young Poles were kept prisoner from 1942 to 1944 performing forced labour. In 1993 Steven Spielberg used Liban as the set of all the scenes from Schindler's List that take place in the Płaszów concentration camp. Not wanting to use the nearby site of the camp itself out of respect, it must have taken little imagination on his part to settle upon Liban. During filming 34 barracks and watchtowers were set-up around the quarry, and though most of the set was subsequently removed, some traces remain confusingly mixed with the genuine historical leftovers from the war, making it unclear just how uncomfortable you should feel as you walk amongst the many gallows-like fenceposts strung with barbed wire and rusty machinery. Certainly, the most disturbing site is the central pathway paved with Jewish headstones, which we can put you at ease by assuring you is not genuine. An incredibly evocative, yet peaceful and beautiful site, Liban allows you to explore Kraków's World War II history on your own terms, interpreting it as you like without the hand-holding of history books or tourist bureaus... Directions: Enter the quarry at your own risk by following a trail from Krak's Mound toward Podgórze cemetery along the rim of and into the quarry, or try your luck from ul. Za Torem

Cracow

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

love the city, it's climat, Cracow is a city known for historical monuments such as Wawel (the castle of polish kings) but also for it's cultural life. District called "Kazimierz", which by the way is a jewish area, is full of small pubs, restaurants, clubs. If you want to party go there. And so if you are there you have to go to place called "okrąglak" it's a bulding where you can buy at "Endzior" the cheapest but also the best casserole, "zapiekanka" in polish, in whole city. Usually there is a queue/line still it's worth waiting ;) In the Main Market's neibourhood you will find a lot of churches, after all we are catholic, although not all of them is still opened daily such as the st. Wojciech Church, which by the way is in the main market. It's a small church, i think it's even the smallest in the city. Cracow is students city. Every year there are students days "Juwenalia", at that time (usually 3 days) students rule the city. The participants march from a college's campus to city's main square, where in a symbolic gesture, the mayor of a city hands keys to the city's gates to the students. The three days are free from lectures and filled with concerts, parties, sports events as well as beer drinking. Friendly people. may have sometimes problem with language because not everybody is capable of speaking english, still in most places you ought not to have problem. If so ask young people. (* i'm 19 however when i started school at 6 there wasn't a law telling that children have to study foreign languages, in public schools the level is still poor but every year it's growing ;) you need to remember that since 1989 we are free nation, before, comunism ruled in our contry. *) best time to visit june - the weather is in poland unpredictable however i find june as the month most of a time warm and sunny. what els...hm...if you have any questions just ask and i'll try to answer them ;)

Muzeum Inżynierii Miejskiej w Krakowie

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

great place to visit with children, rain or shine. Located in Kazimierz district, you can walk to. Very convenient, close to other tourist attractions. Cool building, interactive exhibits fun for kids of any age. Museum is not to big so it does not get boring :) Exposition contains old cars and machinery. It can be a trip back to the past. My kids loved it. I think you will not be disappointed.
