Wensha Spa
3 Recommendations: 1 Favorable, 2 Critical
Wensha Spa at the CCP Complex is fast becoming a hot-spot for body-pampering aficionados. It's location is perfect for locals and tourists alike--it is accessible to a lot of other hotels and restaurants along Roxas Boulevard and within the CCP complex, and a mere stone's throw away from historical sites such as Intramuros as well as the National Museum. Wensha is also a boon to those who are into early-morning exercise, as this spa is open 24 hours! So whether you come from shopping at the nearby Mall of Asia, a full-day's work at the office, a night shift at the nearby call centers, or a quick jog or tai-chi session along the bay area, you can be sure to find this spa open and ready to welcome you! The most popular services that Wensha offers are a foot massage at PhP500 (about $12) or their promotional 2-hour body-and foot-massage combination with two (!) therapists for a mere PhP1088 (around $25). They also have various other massage, body scrub, facial care, waxing, as well as nail care treatments. There's a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room for those who want to go that route. How about a haircut or eyelash extensions? Wensha has that too. As if that weren't enough, all the massage treatments include a buffet with unlimited servings of soup and drinks. The food is nothing spectacular, but not bad given the price. For those who are more discriminating about their food, however, you can opt to order ala carte instead, or dine elsewhere as there are many nearby eating establishments. A word of caution: like most eat-all-you-can restaurants, Wensha enforces a strict "no leftover policy," and you'll have to pay an extra PhP300 for food and PhP60 for drinks if you are tempted to take more than you can actually consume. Wensha also puts a premium on security, and provides customers with lockers that have a special sensor-locking mechanism to ensure the safety of your belongings. Ever felt totally zonked-out and ready to sleep after a massage? Here's more good news--unlike other spas, Wensha allows you to sleep off your fatigue for up to 12 hours! Rooms are mostly private (good for two), so you can feel free to snore away! Most importantly, for ordinary folk like me, this spa is the real deal, i.e., there's no hanky panky! If you're looking for the so-called "happy ending," look elsewhere, please! For the price, add-ons and quality of service, when it comes to Wensha spa, I'm a fan!

Harbor View
1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,
Harborview offers an eating-out experience that allows you control over food portions and allows you to pick ways to have your food cooked. You can buy the freshest raw ingredients--shrimp, crab, oysters, mussels, clams and various other shellfish, different types of tuna, grouper (locally called lapu-lapu), tilapia, milkfish and many other fish options, squid, octopus, and meats and vegetables at the adjoining wet market, then bring your purchases to the restaurant of your choice (there's a whole strip of restos to pick from) to have your meal cooked just the way you like it. On a typical family outing, we would buy a kilo or two each of mussels (for soup), oysters (which we have steamed or cooked in vinegar, better known as kinilaw), (barbequed) pork belly, shrimp (tempura), (chili garlic shrimp), (singaporean-style) crab, and (sweet-and-sour) lapu-lapu. Rice and drinks are ordered at the restaurant where we have the food cooked (we personally patronize ROBBIE'S). There are charges for cooking based on the weight of the ingredients purchased. Our bill for the meal described would run to about PhP8000 (approx $180), all-inclusive, for a pig-out meal for around 12 people. That comes to just about PhP650 per head or $15.00! This is a bit higher than the average Juan might spend locally for a burst-to-the-seams meal, but is definitely a good deal for expats/visitors!

Dagonoy Public Market
1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,
Dagonoy Public Market in san Andres has become famous because after it was completed in February 2004 it was the recipient for the year of the "Huwarang Palengke, Mura na, Malinis pa" award, a yearly contest initiated by the Department of Agriculture and the Metro Manila mayors. It has also come to the attention of the public lately as the market where former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo spent time to spruce up her image after lifting up the state of emergency in Mindanao after the massacre there. It has 456 stalls, including 220 wet sections, 112 dry goods sections, 22 fast food and two ice sections.

Cowboy Grill
1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,
A little rowdy and perhaps, a bit too noisy and casual, but generally a fun place for live music. The crowd (should I say, the mob) can get carried away by the music and noise but the bands are okay, quality wise. Don't expect original music - just the "plakado" type, or almost exact renditions of popular hits and contemporary music.
