Ostrog

8 Recommendations: 8 Favorable,

On the road from Podgorica towards Niksic, just after you pass the famous town of Danilovgrad which was fated never to be capital city, on the right hand side as though cut into the cliffs is the monastery of Ostrog. The first thing that comes to my mind when I see the cliffs where the monastery is situated is that it is incredible that the hand of man alone without the help of the Almighty could have made such a wonder in such a place. Ostrog is the most visited place of pilgrimage not only in Montenegro but in a wider area, and members of all faiths represented in Montenegro come to visit it (Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim). The relics of St. Basil are believed to have miraculous powers and there are very frequent instances and stories of people who have gone on a pilgrimage and been healed and cured in a miraculous way.

Then Sylvester Stallone and numerous other famous actors, artists, kings and princes from all over the world used to visit this magic place. Sveti Stefan is the place with the best pedigree in Montenegro, and fortunately is still well-preserved and one of the most attractive Montenegrin tourist destinations. Entrance costs for visitors are 7 euro. When making pictures keep in mind the island is still a hotel with guests, so for them some privacy is in order.

Manastir Ostrog

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

Monastery Ostrog, a miracle build by nature and human interactions, carved almost in its entirety in a vertical mountain cliff, is today the pearl of Montenegrin spiritualism that is annually visited by more then a hundred thousand pilgrims from around the world and of all religions. It is one of three most visited Christian destinations on the planet with its cave-like chapel and monastery complex that preserves the sacrilege of Saint Basil the Orthodox Saint of Miracles. All of Montenegrin spiritualism, belief and cultural treasures found their home high up in the Ostrog cliffs. This destination which will take your breath away will fill your soul with elevated feelings of love toward God. Amongst Montenegro people there is an uncountable amount of stories about miraculous effects of the relics of Saint Basil. One of the most interesting stories amongst them is the story of the American senator William Bill Bar. His wife named Dojna Galic Bar, an American physiatrist with a Montenegro heritage, recently published a book named “Blue Pigeon” where she documented the visit of her husband to the monastery. The republican senator from Illinois survived an assassination attack in 1970. He was wounded and the doctors where not able to save his leg. The remaining pain created much difficulty for him and the doctors where unable to help with the pain or the constant fever and other related medical issues. According to the senator he had an unusual dream one night in which he visited a small white church in a cliff of a mountain. In the dream that kept reappearing night after night, an old man with gray hair and a language he did not understand walked him thru room after room of this church while in the same time healing ill people in the church with his touch. He told his wife about the dream but neither him nor her understood it. While he was looking for medicine that could help him with his pains, by chance the senator met a maker of modern prosthesis and whose heritage was from Yugoslavia. During a visit to the mans office he noticed a picture of a small white church and one of a white haired saint Basil on the wall. From this man named Jane, the found out everything about Ostrog and decided to visit the monastery. He made the trip in 1980 together with a group of other patience who lost limbs. In the days before the trip the senator fasted and learned a prayer in the Serbian language. During his stay in Montenegro the walked up to the Upper monastery daily, with much pain because he was strangely attracted to the place. He stated that these visits could not compare to anything else in life. Every day the pains became less and less as he kneeled in front of the remains of Saint Basil. He returned home from his trip with no pain at all with a great faith in his hearth and soul, and a few icons that he gave to close friends.
