Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa

3 Recommendations: 3 Favorable,

Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa is the oldest in Mexico: 80 years old in 2009 and years have only arrive to make it better. What distinguishes though is not her age but the fact that it is one of the most recognized orchestras in Mexico and for some, the best in its type. Its current director is Fernando Lozano and during orchestra season you can attend any of their magnificent concerts at their current home: The State Theater (Teatro del Estado) located on one of the main avenues in the city, Ávila Camacho. If you want to know about concert dates visit their website www.sinfonicadexalapa.org You can also listen to a sample and learn about the history of one of Xalapa's most cherished treasures.

Anthropology Museum

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

It's an excellent place to meet with Olmec culture, which is the root of Veracruz. This museum have two of the biggest colossal olmec head in the country, which were carved in stone by the olmecs. Also there is a specific sculpture made of jade. In short, the museum is the third in importance in Mexico. Worth the visits.

Callejón del Diamante

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Callejón del Diamante is a favorite among both locals and foreigners. This narrow alley started hosting a few urban artists (as they call themselves) a few years ago, but now you can even find it hard to walk along its two blocks as more and more vendors added to the existing ones and new cafés, stores and all kinds of shops started springing up. If you like it alternative, this is definitely the place for you: you can find from very cheap hand made local stuff to goods imported from places as far as Peru or India. If shopping is not your thing, the cosmopolitan atmosphere on the alley make it just the right place to sit down, have a cup of coffee and watch people walking by. I bet you there's something interesting to see.

Museo de la Ciudad Casa de Xalapa

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

Casa de Xalapa or The City Museum has been the latest add to Xalapa's museum scene. A city that hosts several places that tell the stories of other cultures and peoples deserved a place for herself. This museum was inaugurated in 2007 and is located right in the heart of downtown in a 19th century style house. The collection contains pieces from the prehispanic period until the 20th century. Even if small, it would take you over an hour to fully appreciate all of the hidden treasures and features presented here. The museum has seven rooms divided into: pre-hispanic Xalapa, 18th century society, the Fairs during the Colony, Independence and Santa Ana's time, Athens of Veracruz, 20th century characters and Xalapa's gastronomy. Some of these are "Do touch" areas so you better take advantage of this new possibility of learning. There's also multimedia resources that can help you understand what the evolution of this city has been like. This museum opens from Tuesday through Sturday from 10 AM to 7 PM.

Parque Ecologico Cerro de Macuiltepetl

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

If you look at a map of Xalapa you'll see that right in the middle of the city there is a quite large green stain. If you come on the road you'll notice how the city is spread around a hill. That is the Cerro de Macuiltépetl, Xalapa's largest park. This place stands out of the city not only because of its height but also because of the large variety of plants and trees you'll be able to find here. Even if this place is a favorite among the locals, it is more the kind of place where you can relax. No bikes, skateboards, dogs, etc. are allowed. However if you and your friends or family want to come for a picnic there are special areas with tables and grills. There is also a small museum and a pyramid at the top. Do you exercise? Then join the dozens of fitness enthusiasts that come here every day. The entrance to the park is free and it is open from 6 AM to 5 PM (6PM in the summer).

Paseo Los Lagos

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

El paseo de Los Lagos (Promenade). Xalapa means spring in the sand because of the many springs that can be found all over the city. In the 19th century a factory built a dam in order to collect the water coming out of the sorrounding springs. The factory would eventually close but the dam stayed and then it became Xalapa's inhabitants favorite promenade. There are four "lakes" (large ponds) sourrounded by trees and exhuberant vegetation. On weekends the place gets full of families and kids running up and down , riding bycilcles or skateboarding. There are all kinds of vendors: snacks, beverage, balloons, candy which make the place a weekly carnival. Sometimes there are also all sorts of events at the stage located right under the University's school of Art on the north end. If you want to stay away from the traffic and noise this is the place to be. And you know what the best oart is? You will only be five minutes away from the city center!

Cascada de Texolo

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

La cascada de Texolo (Texolo waterfalls, x pronounced as sh) is one of the most interesting places to visit if you come to the Xalapa area. It is located 3 kilometers away from the beautiful town of Xico but you don't need to be highly energetic if you want to get there on foot (otherwise you can get a cab: bargain the price before if you want to avoid a rip off). The fall is rather thin but during the rainy season (summer months) it looks quite impressive and because of the canyon created for thousands of years it makes quite a rumbling. The stardom of this fall started with, as everybody around here knows, the making of Romancing the Stone (1984) with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner when part of the movie was made here -other parts were filmed in the city of Veracruz. There is a small restaurant with relatively low prices but my recommendation would be to wait to get back to Xico where you will find nice places to eat. A last warning: watch your kids since the place does not have any defense barriers.

Hing Long Buffet Chino

1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,

If you were a native of Xalapa (like me) and you'd have heard about all the variety of restaurants ten years ago, you would have believed. However, things are changing and together with a few other Chinese restaurants Hing Long adds to the new oriental flavors available in Xalapa. You want it good and cheap? This is the place for the budget minded. Hing Long offers a buffet (the selection is limited but yet good) of Chinese food with some of the common dishes you expect to find: fried rice, dumplings, rolls, and of course pork and lots of veggies. The buffet is only 79.00 pesos (Dic 2010) which is less than 7 US dollars. Hint: you can have a to-go order which can be as cheap as 43 pesos (less than 4 dollars for soup, rice and one dish to choose) and eat it in the restaurant. If quantity is your concer, don't worry since you will be more than satisfied. Or you can just go for the whole menu and enjoy. One last thing: Chinese friends of mine thought it was good, though not 100% Chinese as you can imagine but then they said it was a nice combination of Chinese and Mexican flavors.
