Gunung Tahan
1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,
Gunung Tahan, 'the Forbidden Mountain', has long been the source of local myth and legend. A vast monkey standing guard over two pots of magic stones lives on the summit, according to the folk fore of Taman Neegara's indigenous people. The Orang Asli people of Taman Negara, the Batek., belive the forest is the home of their ancestors. They hold great respect for their natural environments and only take from it what is necessary for their survival. It is taboo or lavoc for them to destroy their natural heritage. Originally the Orang Asli had no need to travel and explore the hills because all they needed for survival could be found in the lowland valleys. Today, guides will willingly escort tourist to the summit of Taman Negara's hill and mountains. The summit of Gunung Tahan defeated the first expedition to attempt to gain it in 1863 when the Sultan of Pahang's team was blocked by the awesome Teku Gorge. Only in 1905 was it finally conquered by a British-Malay expedition led by the explorer Leonard Wray. Gunung Tahan from Kuala Tahan Gunung Tahan at 2'187 metres above sea level is located in the Tahan Range and is the largest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. There are three routes up to Gunung Tahan: from Kuala Tahan, from Merapoh and from Kuala Koh. These are arduous trek demanding good physical fitness and mental determination, in addition to well maintained equipment, thorough preparation, and sound leadership if a large group is involved. Weight is crucial when it has to be carried for many days, so food should have minimal packaging and moisture content. To protect the forest, timber fires are not permissible and cooking gas or fuel must, therefore, be carried as well. All rubbish must be accounted for, except materials that can be burned. It is best to eliminate all non-essential packaging before leaving Kuala Tahan. The 110 kilometres return walk from Kuala Tahan to the mountain summit normally takes eight to nine days. The trail passes several river crossings, sometimes hazardous, and traverses long dry ridges demanding rationing of every last drop of water. The climatic extremes are daunting, as conditions on the Gunung Tahan plateau can be very cold, whereas in lowlands, the high humidity is debilitating. Rains can be very heavy and prolonged. Guide Fees >For 4 days trek from Sungei Relau to Gunung Tahan back to Sg Relau : RM1100.00 per guides >For 7 days trek from Kuala Tahan to Gunung Tahan back to Kuala Tahan: RM1600.00 per guides

Taman Negara National Park
1 Recommendations: 1 Favorable,
Lata Berkoh Cascades of Tahan River You will never come to Taman Negara if you don't visit this heaven. Untouchable for the past 130 million years.Lata Berkoh cascades, a great picnic and swimming area surrounded by inspiring natural landscapes. The boat trip up Sungai Tahan to the cascades is one of the most scenic and photogenic in the park. For these reason, it is a highly recommended experience for any visitors. The trips takes about one hour and on sections of the return journey the boatman may turn the motor off for the boat to glide downstream. On various sections of the river the fern covered trees on either side meet to form sheltered avenue. Although the river has traveled some 50 kilometres from Gunung Tahan by the time it reaches the cascades, the waters are generally shallow. The rocky riverbed is suitable for paddling and wading in the cool clean waters. The waters here and in other isolated parts of the park have a slight clear tea coloring resulting from the natural decay of vegetation that falls into the river. The cascades mark the limit for navigation along the river. Here, the bubbling waters provide an invigorating natural spa bath and the riverbanks are popular for picnics and relaxation. There is a camping ground next to the river for those who want to stay overnight, and bookings should be made at the HQ. The alternative to the boat trip to the cascades is a hike of 9.5 kilometres or 3-5 hours (one way ). Adventurous walkers may want to explore the pools and rapids further upstream where there is a rudimentary trail to follow. Kelah Sanctuary Fish Feeding is another interesting place to visit at Sungai Tahan. The most accessible sanctuary is located at Lubuk Tenor, 5 minutes boat ride to Lata Berkoh and Lubuk Melantai which require further trekking for 1-2 hours from Lata Berkoh. This is a designated fish sanctuary area, especially for kelah species, so fishing is prohibited. A popular activity here is to watch the freshwater fish up close intheir natural habitat and to feed them most amazingly they can be summoned by ringing a bell. Lubuk Simpon This the nearest swimming spot in Kuala Tahan. Located only 600 metres from HQ, takes about only 20-30 minutes by walk or less than 10 minutes by boat.
