Teleferico Quito

8 Recommendations: 8 Favorable,

Another classic spot for killer views of Quito is the Teleferico. Take a 10min ride up in the 6 person carriage from 2,950 meters up to 4,050 meters of altitude. It costs around $8/person. At the top you can take it easy by just strolling around enjoying the views from the watch station, grab a bite at one of the cafes or check out the gift shops (but keep in mind like most tourist hot spots things are a little overpriced there), or if you're in shape and somewhat acclimatised to Quito's altitude try taking a little hike up the hill for more views and a closer look at the mountains, you can even take a horseback tour and make a day of it. It's worth it to feel on top of the world for a day!

El Panecillo, Quito

6 Recommendations: 6 Favorable,

Nice place and nice view, 360º of Quito and if the clouds allow you can see Pichinchas, Cayambe, Antisana, Atacazo volcanoes that are in the horizon. The Panecillo hill was an important pre-Inca religous site, from here the Quitu Caras had different rites in honor of the sun or to the moon, and also diffent human sacrifies in honor of them, also, there was an important gold ware house because thet didn't thought like the white people, they thought that the gold was a gift of the sun, so there were million of gold pieces here, that were stolen when the Spaniers were in Ecuador. Now days, we have one big alluminium statue that was builted in 1978 by the oblats religeous order, this Virgin called "Virgen de Quito" or "Virgen de la Apolipsis" is very well appreciated by different tourist and in the site if you wanna, you can do some shopping of Ecuadorian handicrafts too

Basilica del Voto Nacional

5 Recommendations: 4 Favorable, 1 Critical

This building is not historical. Why would anybody bring Gothic architecture to Quito in the late 19th century is questionable. It is not even consistent with its own 'style'. Furthermore, it does not pay any respect to the identity forged in the colonial churches. Unfortunately, it attracts more visitors than many of the authentic historical buildings. Maybe the highlight is the view you get from the top of the towers, if you have the nerve to climb up. To Rafael Espinoza, check your sources! Just a few presidents are buried here (Flores and Garcia Moreno in the cathedral; Rocafuerte, Estrada, Roldos, Febres Cordero in Guayaquil; Cordova, Ayora, Velasco in San Diego cemetery; Alfaro in Montecristi, and so on...)! And the church is not a display of baroque art at all! It is not historical, and not authentic! If you want to see authentic baroque architecture in Quito fo to La Compania.

Teatro Sucre

4 Recommendations: 4 Favorable,

Another important plaza in colonial Quito. At the junction of Guayaquil and Manabi streets is the Plaza del Teatro, with its own Trolley stop. The plaza was restored in the late 1990s and contains benches to the side accross from the Theater. On one of the benches there is a sitting statue of Don Evaristo, a famous comedian and actor from the early to mid 20th century. There are two theaters at the plaza, both with regular scheduled programming, ranging from music concerts, theater, perfomances, to opera. The highlight is the Sucre Theater from the late 19th century, built in neoclassic style, and restored in the late 1990s.

Plaza Grande

4 Recommendations: 4 Favorable,

The Plaza Grande is a must-see in Quito. Most tourists in fact start their visit to the Historical District here. Surrounded by the religious and political powers, both central and local, the plaza is not the foundational site of Quito, by quite close. The building to the West with the national flag atop is the 17th century Presidential Palace (renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries), open to the public early in the mornings. Mondays at 11am, the change of guard is a patriotic event worth witnessing. The 17th century Cathedral stands on the east side, while the 1930s Archbishop's Palace stands across from it. To the east, the 1960s Municipal Building complets the scene. The plaza is the only one in the area that maintains its neoclassical layout, with ornamental fountains and vegetation. On its center there is a statue to Liberty, erected in 1912 to honor the patriots of August 10th, 1809. On its base, a wounded lion roars in retreat from a condor that holds a broken chain in its peak. This sculpture is based on a verse in the Ecuadorian's National Anthem, where the defeated Spanish army are referred to as lions, while the victorious condor is the national bird, and stands for the Ecuadorian troops.
