Great Ocean Rd, VIC

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

Driving the Great Ocean Road (or perhaps even more spectacularly riding it on a motorcycle) you will be taking one of Australia's most famous road trips. You need to take a full day for although the distance isn't huge, the road twists and winds and goes up hill and down dale as it borders the ocean and ventures into the Otway Ranges in places. Personally I think you should take at least two days and make sure you take in all the sights on offer. There's plenty of accommodation along the way but sometimes it gets pretty busy and it's worth booking ahead. You'll find little towns with antique shops and other interesting shopping opportunities, excellent restaurants and some attractions along the way. Or maybe stop for a swim at some of the terrific beaches - take care though, the ocean can be dangerous here (and it's VERY cold!). And not to deter you but here's a reminder to overseas visitors. In Australia we drive on the left-hand side of the road - please be very careful that on this tricky road you remember that at all times and stick to the correct side. Every year there are some nasty accidents when visitors forget this simple fact.

Twelve Apostles Marine National Park

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

The Twelve Apostles are one of the most spectacular sights along the Great Ocean Road. They have been formed by erosion of the coastline, the action of wind and waves leaving these great rock stacks free-standing in the ocean. There's an excellent visitor's centre with ample parking. A walking track takes a tunnel under the road and up to some viewing platforms and a track that allows you to walk a little along the coast. Brilliant photo opportunities.

Port Fairy Gardens by East Beach Caravan Park

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

The Gardens Caravan Park is located just by East Beach in Port Fairy and caters for travellers either with their own tent or caravan, or for those looking for a small cabin for accommodation. The cabins are completely self-contained and they have little verandahs - really sweet. There is more than one playground and next door is the football oval, so a great big reserve for the kids to run and play on - cricket, football etc., plenty of room. You can take your pets. Very popular over the Christmas holiday period.

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

Covering six hectares in beautiful Port Fairy and within walking distance of the south beach (known locally as Pea Soup) or the town centre, this caravan park and camping ground offers a brilliant location to settle for a couple of days in the southwest. As well as spots for your tent or van there is also some accommodation on offer at Southcombe Lodge. You can also take your pets with you to this park. There are cycling and walking tracks and also tennis and squash courts within the park itself, and it's right beside the recently-built heated swimming pool. Blarney Books

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

Blarney Books & Art, as its name might suggest, is about more than just books. It's located in the old Masonic Hall, built in the 1920s and is open Fridays to Mondays - they have a flag that flies if the shop is open. This shop specialises in quality secondhand literature, and they also have a wonderful art space with regular exhibitions. They aren’t your average secondhand bookshop. The interior of our shop is colourful and spacious (prams & wheelchairs can easily be accommodated), and their stock is well-chosen. Their main focus is on literary fiction, literary criticism, art, biography, and Australian and world history. They also have a lot of crime and true crime, sci-fi/fantasy, travel, self-help and psychology, women’s issues, and plenty of titles for children and young adults. They have also started an annual art award that is literary inspired - see the competitions page on their website at http://www.blarneybooks.com.au/ for details. A great place to get your holiday reading!

Rebecca's Cafe

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

I LOVE Rebecca's! Whether you just want a coffee and a piece of cake, or you want a special home-made breakfast or lunch (they are not open for dinner), you can't go past Rebecca's. Casual cafe dining with food to die for! I have never had a bad meal (or coffee) at Rebecca's. no matter what my choice. Thick, warm soups in winter and some excellent vegetarian dishes as well - my favourite is the pumpkin burger with beetroot relish. Service is usually brilliant although if it's really busy you can wait a little while. They also sell fancy biscuits, cake, teas and some dishes (like vegetarian lasagne) as take away portions. The take-away speciality is mini yo-yos. If you are visiting Port Fairy then a stop at Rebecca's is a must. Oh yes, and if you are there in summer (or winter), try their home-made ice-cream and sorbet from their shop next door - awesome!

Port Fairy VIC

2 Recommendations: 2 Favorable,

Port Fairy is a picturesque small coastal town in the south west of Victoria which can provide a fabulous luxury weekend escape or a terrific family summer holiday. It is on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast at the end of the Great Ocean Road. Built where the Moyne River meets the ocean, and settled in the 1830s, Port Fairy has almost 60 buildings registered with the National Trust and these historic stone cottages and town buildings give the town a very special ambiance. Many of them have been turned into luxury accommodation or first class restaurants so you can be assured of a special place to lay your head and some brilliant dining. Along with two excellent beaches, there is good fishing in the river, a golf course that runs along the ocean with spectacular views and a heated swimming pool. A theatre has a summer movie programme. Two spacious caravan parks provide budget accommodation and excellent caravan and tent sites. As well Port Fairy is blessed with a wide variety of festivals over the year, from the weeks-long Moyneyana summer festival (http://www.moyneyana.port-fairy.com/), Winter Weekends, the Ex Libris Literary Festival, the Spring Music Festival and the world renowned Port Fairy Folk Festival (http://www.portfairyfolkfestival.com/) held at the beginning of March each year. The bird watching is very special, particularly in winter and during shearwater breeding season, with lots of black swans, gulls, oystercatchers, pelicans and other water birds. There's a great walk around Griffiths Island and out to the lighthouse, and often good surfing off south beach. The sea breeze makes for brilliant kite flying, windsurfing and kite surfing. You can take a boat ride around the bay and sometimes you can even catch a ride in the historic lifeboat. There's kayaks for hire to paddle in the river, or bikes for hire to take a ride around town. Whenever you choose to visit, and however long you choose to stay, there's something special waiting for you in Port Fairy!
