I really recommend to take a train. The prices start at 58 PLN to 128 PLN for 2nd class depending on type of service (TLK, EX, IC). Check out the schedule and prices at http://rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143 (it's in English).

you can go by train, but it takes 7-8 hours and I would recommend it. It is cheap, safe and easy. Krakow and Poznan are beautiful. Great choice! Have fun in Poland.

Buses will be the same amount of money but less comfortable as the roads in Poland are quite lousy. And the leg room is still small if you compare trains. If you are a student under 26 take ISIC card as it gives you -37% off the normal fare

Go by train and avoid the bus at all costs! As Dagmara quiet rightly pointed out the bus is very uncomfortable and the roads enroute are in a terrible condition. The train via Wrocław is somewhat slow between Krakow and Katowice and then speeds up a bit for the remainder of the journey.

There are basically 2 train routes between Krakow and Poznan...A less frequent but shorter route operates via Czestochowa, however I'd recommend the standard more frequent route via Poznan...You don't save much time by getting an Express or Intercity train and the fact that you have to make a compulsory reservation makes it both much more expensive and restrictive...With a standard osobowy or pospieszny ticket you can take break your journey as many times as you want and it's valid through to the next day, so you can spread out what can be quite a gruelling journey into shorter sections, see some interesting places and even have an overnight stopover in Wroclaw on the way...The poszpieszny trains are cheap enough at 54PLN (less than €15)and are the more comfortable option...However, the osobowy service, which you must stress emphatically at the counter when you buy the ticket (otherwise you'll be routinely issued with a poszpieszny one), is a bargain at 30PLN (c. €8) and only takes an hour or so longer...As for buses, I really don't know...The timetables are confusing even for Poles, the information offered at the bus station is very sparse if you don't speak Polish and the prices are certainly nowhere near as good value as the trains...
