Hi, My husband and I are looking to take a trip to Malaysia in either June or August. Is one of those months better than the other in...
Web
...terms of weathher, getting the best deals for airfare, accomm, shopping in malls/markets etc. We're looking to spend 1 week in KL and 1 week in Penang, is that too much time in each place? We are huge fans of Thailand spec Koh Samui as we've been there 3 times now over the past 8 years and looking for a similar type of holiday ie cheap hotels, shopping, food, service etc but wish to try a new location. Looking at ideally 4 star hotels in both KL and Penang. Any recommendations. We're hoping these places are similar to Thailand where you get alot more for your money than you do for similar prices in Australia. Look forward to some recommendations.

Hi, I'm Wan from Kuala Lumpur...
Weather: either June or August is almost same, nice weather + some raining especially at noon time.
Spending Time: 1 week each place is a bit long time but I suggest you 4-5 days enough, but its ok for Penang for relaxing.
4 Star hotel: in KL and Penang, there is a lots of choices, specifically please email me at wansalam@yahoo.com

Looks like you are a fan of sun & beach. You should consider Redang Island, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. You will enjoy the same powdery white sand and crystal clear water as Koh Samui minus the clubbing.
Depending on individual, a week may be too long or may be too short in each place. Generally, 3 days 2 nights in each place, Penang and Kuala Lumpur would be more than enough. Probably more in Penang if you are interested to get tan.
In terms of shopping, we have sales most of the time, depending on which mall, that's all. Malaysia Mega Sales is held during year end only. Shopping is definitely better in Kuala Lumpur compared to Penang.
Check out hotels in Batu Ferringi, Penang and Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. As not sure about your budget, can't recommend specific hotels to you.
Certain things can be cheaper in Malaysia compared to Koh Samui if you know where to look. Sometimes you can get reasonably priced item from the mall compared to bazaar shopping.
For Kuala Lumpur, check out :
Bukit Bintang :
Pavillion Shopping Mall
Sungai Wang Shopping Mall - more of bazaar shopping
Lot 10 Shopping Mall
Nearby Bukit Bintang
KLCC Twin Towers
Not too far but you need to take a cab, about 15mins drive if not stuck in the jam :
Mid Valley & The Gardens Mall
Chinatown (5 mins drive from Bukit Bintang):
Petaling Street evening market : Bazaar shopping with lots of pirated goods
Central Market : Handicraft
Penang, check out :
Queensbay Mall (Though not convenient for you to go if you don't drive in Penang and stay in Batu Feringgi)
Gurney Mall
Food :
Gurney Drive (next to Gurney Mall) - I won't say it's fantastic food but should be ok for tourist
New Lane, near Komtar, town centre
It's cheaper to rent a car to get around or join a day tour if you intend to tour Penang Island. Public transport in Penang isn't fantastic. No meter taxi which translate to overprice taxi. Public bus requires long wait as punctuality is not in their vocabulary.
If you are into heritage, check out Khoo Kongsi whilst in Penang : http://www.khookongsi.com.my/
Stop by Edelweiss Cafe if you are going for heritage trail in Armenian Street (nearby Khoo Kongsi) :
The owner restore the house and furnished it with lots of antiques : http://www.edelweisscafe.com/
Other places of interest in Penang :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kek_Lok_Si_Temple
http://www.cheongfatttzemansion.com/
Chowrasta Market, Penang Road - only if you are interested to buy locally made food
Spa can be cheap if they have promotions.

Prices in KL are slightly higher than in Koh Samui, but way cheaper than in Australia. If you're into culture and the Malaysian way of life, well sure, a week is OK, especially if you like to eat. We've got all sorts of cuisines here. If cost and getting a tan is priority, check out Langkawi. Great beaches, good & cheap hotels, cheap food, cheap booze, cheap car rentals. 5 days there would be adequate. You should check out our rainforest reserves and national parks. City, beach & rainforest. Why not give it a try?

Malaysia's climate is almost the same all year. Lately, the temperature and humidity are high during daytime... so u sweat a lot. Bring thin clothes.
If you're spending 7 days in KL it's a little bit too long. u can go south to Malacca where u can see the historical sites and culture in Malaysia. It only takes 2 hours ride via coach from KL. 4 stars hotels in KL and Penang are easy to find too.....

Hi,
You can visit Malaysia all year long, although sometimes it rains in the noon. However if you want to go to east coast island like Tenggol, Redang, Perhentian, Tioman, the season is from Mar - Oct.
You don't need to fly from one place to another in Peninsular Malaysia. Land transportation will do as most places are easily access and the time taken can be same as flying except flying from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi.
I would like to recommend to you to other interesting places in Malaysia. There are a lot besides Kuala Lumpur and Penang. You can actually travel from Kuala Lumpur right up to Penang to Langkawi in 2 weeks. By this way you can visit most part of Malaysia.
I provide this services, you can visit my website for those recommended places here:

Hi I think with one week in KL, you can cover a lot of ground. 4 star hotels that I like are Melia Hotel, Ferderal Hotel(though it needs a bit of sprucing up), Royale Bintang.
As for Penang, I have stayed at the Vistana hotel and am very satisfied. If you like tostay near town, I think Trader;s hotel is a great place. Close to local eateries and the Komtar. KL is still a good place to shop and they have got the Malaysian Sale on till August.
July or August would be a good time but avoid the National Day holidays on 30th August and Singapore National Day around 9 Augist -11 August as operators tend to charge a premium during those periods.

You can spend about 4,5 days in KL, probably spend 1 day in the historic city of Malacca would be good.
If you are in the Nothern part of Malaysia, spend 3,4 days in Penang.. do visit some of the town in Kedah as well. Kedah is famous for their paddy fields. Go further north to Langkawi Island. There are some good places to visit in Langkawi. By the way Langkawi is a duty free island but you would need to spend at least 3 days in Langkawi to enjoy the duty free goods.
