There are lots of hoteles, it will depend on your budget. The nighlife is concetrated in Providencia and Bellavista nighborhoods. Also in the uppers Santiago in Vitacura.

As the previoust post said, it all depends on your budget
I always stayed in "Hotel Manquehue" http://www.hotelmanquehue.cl/eng/index.php
but in my last trip I stayed in a place for backpackers called "Hostal Forestal" and I really had a good time there, we had a barbecue and I met people from all over the world http://www.hostalforestal.cl/

As everyone has said, all depends on the budget you´re willing to pay.
Prices range in between U$ 30 - U$ 380 per night.
Interesting places to visit in Santiago are:

House of lo Matta

cerro San Cristobal
Metropolitan Cathedral
Pre-Columbiam Museum
Museum of Fine Arts

Remenber that several international Hotel Companies like Marriott, Embassy or Hyatt will offer you the same prices as America or Europe, so maybe you should rent a flat. It is true that the nightlife in concentrated in Providencia Borough, but you also can find it in Santiago Dowtown or Ñuñoa Borough in a place called "plaza Ñuñoa", or Barrio Brasil "Brazil neighborhood" which is located in westhern Downtown. I think the best place to stay in stgo is Parque Forestal place, because it´s the center of the capital. so you can go everywhere easily.. but if you preffer you can call me and invite to you for free to see a nices places..if you want a give you a day.. best regards jorge jparraguez@sernageomin.cl see you.
