Which month is best to go to Amsterdam as a tourist?

avatar

I want to go to Netherlands, pls tell me when it's best to go. I don't want it to be too crowded when I go like it is during the Hemp festival. Is there a good time when the crowd's less and the weather's not too cold?

Here's my input for what its worth:
June is a great time to come to the Netherlands. The temperature is pleasant and Amsterdam is not too crowded. There are also a lot of activities in the summer that one would not have to enjoy in the winter.

I think now is a great time- aside from it being a bit cooler, the tulip fields are in bloom, so if you venture outside of the city (which is easy to do via bus or train) you can enjoy the beauty of the fields.

Summer months are ok, but it is generally much more crowded, because it's 'vacation' period.

If your mode on mobility is mainly on foot, it may be tiring and stressfull to brush alongside the throngs of people like you, all eager to taste & experience being in Amsterdam. The other more exciting mode is rent a bike (bicycle) and you will not have that daunting fear of the masses which Amsterdam draws during the Summer to Autumn months. Try strolling with yr bike and enjoy the coastline by Zandvoort, or through Haarlem and make your way down to Katwijk aan Zee or if your stamina still holds, search for Scheveningen and taste the fine sea foods waiting there... deep-fried and fresh from the catch!!!

It's my experience, there isn't a day in the year when it's not crowded in Amsterdam, since over 20 million tourists visit each year.

But why won't you come, when the weather is fine, from May to August? On June 22nd, the longest day, sundown is at 22:30...

I agree with others that June is one of the best times to visit. That goes for most major cities in Europe for that matter. European holidays/vacations are in June and August, so any time before or just after that is best.

Unless you like crowds.

Personally I think that Amsterdam is best to visit in May and I'll tell you why. Firstly, of course because are not so many people around since this month isn't a holiday month as July and August are. Second, in this time the weather is supposed to vary between 17 to 23*C which I think is the best temperature for going on a trip. Third, because the tulips will be still not gone although it is the end of their blooming period. I don't know how long you are going to stay in Amsterdam but if you're coming for about a week then you should certainly visit Keukenhof. It's one of the biggest parks in Europe and it's lovely during spring time. BTW it's not too far from Amsterdam so it will be easy for you to go there. May be it will be a bit crowded since its spring, however, it's worth the visit.
Enjoy your stay in the Netherlands whenever you decide to come :)

I've worked in a hotel in Amsterdam, so I can say when it's less crowded it will be Jan-Mar/Apr and Sep-Dec, and when the weather is not too cold, hmm what is too cold for you because that's personal. But I will say Mar/Apr and Sep/Oct.

There is no such thing as 'bad time' to visit the Netherlands. Count on rain anyway, LOL! But fine weather can be expected from may till half of september!

Personally, May would be nice because of the tulips but June is also good because of the sales! :-) It's not too hot or crowded to visit the museum.

Hey, if you go now, you can still catch Van Gogh's Starry Night!

It would be a great help to follow up how you spent and enjoyed visiting our country. Was the temps and atmosphere back then favorable to see you again this time of the year? :)

From April-September is great. Not too cold. Even in the peak season you can find quiet corners of Amsterdam. Or take one of the free ferries along the Ij to the North bank for some peace and quiet and a nice view over Amsterdam.
