Speaking about transport the best way is rail road (I.e. train). it's the best choice including price, speed and convenience.
The best town public transport is mini bus (in cities where underground exist - Kiev, Harkiv, Dnipropetrovsk - this is the best and actualy cheap one.

I agree that you should avoid hotels because the cheap one are not very good and expencive are rather expencive/ So rent a flat))

If you have some more quastions you are welcome))
Good luck.

Hi Luke.
It depends what places you are planning to visit. But some general advice is try to avoid hotels (they are rather expensive), apartment rent is much cheaper sometimes and more convenient. Public transportation is not bad in some big cities - the most popular is "marshrutka" - small mini-buses going round the city. Food is good in Ukraine. there are plenty of local restaurants with normal pricing and relatively good service. if you plan to travel around Ukraine - the best way is to use trains. if you don't have a companion with a car. buses are also good, but sometimes not reliable.
if you specify where exactly you are heading, i can help you with more concrete tips.

good luck.

There are several points I would like to make:
- People in Ukraine speak Ukrainian and Russian. If you speak some Russian, you'll have no problem communicating with locals. Foreign languages are a problem: most people here don't speak English. Number of English-speakers is higher in large cities, such as Kyiv or Kharkiv and if you need to ask advice/directions in English, u'd better search for younger people, since they are more likely to speak the language. The good thing is that people are quite friendly and willing to help.
- Money. You'd better use cash, not credit cards while traveling around Ukraine. The latter are not so widely used as in US and Western Europe. The currency here is Hryvna (1 dollar = approx. 8 hryvnas), but you can exchange your euros or dollars in any currency exchange department of many banks, just look for the places with signs "Обмін Валют". The prices are not high: e.g., a ticket for a 'marshrutka' (route taxi) costs 2 hryvnas, a bottle of beer costs 4-5 hryvnas.
- Where to go. Kyiv: capital city, Lviv - beautiful town with reach history and cozy architecture; the Crimea - a peninsula with nice natural landscapes and subtropical climare on the South, worth visiting in summer, Kamyanets-Podilskiy - a small town with castles and historical sites.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

You better exchange money in the banks. You must have grivna (Ukrainian money) every time with you because nobody except USD cash. Every time bring a pasport with you wherever you go. Do not trust strangers, they like to cheat strangers.

Hi Luke!

Firstly you should take everywhere your passport or the copy of it to avoid policemen!
Just know, that not many people speak English here.
You should decide what whould you like to visit.
Are you coming here just for fun or to visit historical sites, so u could decide what city to visit.
I think that the best cities to visit are Kiev, Odessa and Lvov.

Good luck!!

Hi, Luke!

The most beautiful places to visit are the Carpathian mountains, especially the city Mukachevo (there are a castle there and nature is really wonderful).
There is a beautiful dendropark Sofiyevka (Uman, Cherkassy region). It's very large and it really worth to visit in every season of the year.
And, of course, Crimea! It's unique region with subtropical climate. It's the best place for hiking: there are sea and mountains.
The niciest cities to visit are:
Lviv
Kyiv
Odessa (It's my favourite city!!!! I just LOVE it!)
Poltava (There are a lot of historical places and museams)

And one more place to visit is Svjatogorsk - there are a beautiful churches (Svjatogorska Lavra) and the nature is truly beautiful.

I hope you'd like Ukraine;) Enjoy your jourey!!!

Everything depends upon where exactly you are going. Ukraine is big and there are many nice places to visit and see. Personally I like Sofiyevka park in Uman city - it is great, especially now when everything will be in blossom. It was founded yet in 18th century and has a lot of sculptures and structures of the time. Lvov is a nice city in Western Ukraine, maybe not too much impressive but very peaceful and cultured. Among places of interest there is Citadel, Zamkova hill (Castle hill), Opera house, City hall tower, Rynkova square, museum of beer, etc. Crimea is nice as a region, there are many beuatiful cities like Yalta, Odessa, etc.

You should definitely go to Carpathian mountains if you like hiking, namely the little village Yaremche, which is made for tourists where you can easily find a place to live and also nice and hospitable people are provided.
And then my favourite city in Ukraine is Lviv. It is a "must" if you want to see a beautiful city with an ancient architecture and visit many cosy cafes where coffee is the best made in the whole Ukraine.

I can add that you also can visit Chernivtsi. It's beautiful city too. Two beautiful fortresses situated near Chernivtsi - Kamianeyts-Podilski and Hotyn. Uzhgorod is also rather nice city. There a lot of castles on Western Ukraine you can watch them. Chernigiv is an old city with old churches, may be it will be interesting for you to see it.

Hi, Luke! A little difficult to answer: you should decide what do you prefer: history or nature and better to say about the region of your jorney. Few common advises:
1. Kiev. Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra(the most famous gorgeous monastery
2.Odessa. Odessa Opera House(second place in Europe by it's beauty), night life
3. The Crimea (Vorontzovskii castle, Lasto4kino gnezdo(Swallow's nest)- castle on the edge of the rock, beautiful beaches
4. West Ukraine: Carpatian mountains, lakes in Volyn region
If you wish to stay few nights better to rent a flat: hotels are very expensive and not all of them good)
Try to ask more directly: you will have better advises. But: i really hope you will like Ukraine!!! Good luck!

Hi there!
If this is ur first visit the best places to visit is Kiev and Crimea (Black sea). In Kiev its Andreevskiy Spusk, Khreshyatik str - fiesr places tourists go for a walk tour. In Crimea u may fly from Kiev (like 40 min flight) to Simferopol'. From there take taxi or bass to Yalta. There you may see many nice places - take both trip on the sea, see Kings family summer house with nice garden "Levadia", go to csatle on mountain beside the sea "Lastochkino Gnezdo", take trip to the mountain with perfect wiew to the Black sea, have glass of good Crimean vine up there and try some Tatar cousine meals. And you better find ur self mate who will guide you - its ahould be not ukrainian lady. Best way its - some guy from ur region who lives here for some time. Any questions - ask.

Dear Luke!

Ukraine is very safe place to travel (same as other European countries), people are very friendly. Major bank cards accepted in cities and towns where there are lot's of bank ATM machines. Hotels are not very expensive, some expensive ones are in Kyiv, Odesa, Crimea. That's what you would expect from 4-5 star hotels. There are many cheaper ones.
I would recommend you to take airplanes so you could have more free time. Traveling by train is ok but you would buy 1st class (SV) or 2nd class (Coupe)tickets. Might be hot in summer.
The best idea is to get car with a driver, or go by plane.

Kyiv is very interesting is worth the money you spend.
Lviv is very special, prices are more reasonable.
Both cities are like museums of Ukrainian culture.
Crimea is good for summer seaside holidays. Much money for little service. Soviet style but it changes for better. Yalta is nice for much cash.
Odesa is nice city by the sea. Lot's of tourists, restaurants and hotels.
Zaporizhzhya is home city for Ukrainian heroic history.
In 15th-17th centuries it was the capital of Ukrainian Cossacs, the bravest warriors of Europe. There is a renewed
headquarters/fortress of Cossacs in Khortytsya island in Dnirpo river in the heart of Zaporizhzhya city.

Carpathian mountains is a good place for green holiday. There they built Bukovel all-year-round mountain resort with many things to do. Skiing, mountain walking, bicycle riding, SUV and quadro cycles, horse riding, BBQ. Great service. Hundreds restaurants, hotels, bars. Bukovel is 110km from Ivano-Frankivsk.

Yaremche is the centre of Carpathian tourism. Great local food, souvenirs shopping, small waterfall, many hotels and restaurants. Yaremche city is close to Ivano-Frankivsk (50km).

Kolomyia is second large city close to the mountains. Nice architecture, beautiful streets. The only in the world Easter Egg museum.

Ivano-Frankivsk is the gateway to the Carpathian mountains.
Nice architecture, no so busy and crowded as Kyiv and Lviv.
It is popular among tourists. Many local restaurants with tasty Ukrainian food, cafes, bars. This city has maybe the biggest number of Carpathian style restaurants Kolyba. New built hotels. Great atmosphere. Real interesting local museums (website:www.museum.if.ua). Many cultural events. Prices are moderate.
You can get there by plane from Kyiv, by bus or train from Kyiv, Lviv or any other place in Ukraine.

Should you be interested in going to Ivano-Frankivsk and Carpathians or getting a car, feel free to contact me with all your questions.

Take care,
Yuri

Hello!
You definitely should go to open-air Museum Pirogovo near Kiev, where you can see all the Ukrainian history, how people lived, real houses of that time, buy souvenirs also and so on. Then you can go to Khortitsa in the Zaporozhye city where you'll see the life of Ukrainian Kosaks, horse riding, national kosaks' meal. Also it can be Askaniya Nova National Reserve, where you can find places which look like a wild forest with water springs and small lakes and ponds, swarming with fish, wild animals and even more... Man... We have so many places to go and so many things to do in Ukraine! :))) Just come! Feel free to write me if you need some help. :) And have a nice time in Ukraine! :)))

Trains are an economical way to travel. Travelling either 'coupe' or 'luxe' means you have a reasonably comfortable bed. Most train journeys at night take the whole night, and you arrive early the next morning. Although there are no showers on the trains!! It means you are travelling and sleeping for the cost of a very cheap hotel.
A local companion can be worthwhile - but you do need to be careful who you choose. If you would like more in-depth answers, please feel free to contact me russell@gmail.com and I'd be happy to answer more questions.
