Hi Shailaja,
Thats great that you're coming to Kenya! For one day, it might be a bit far to go to Shimba hills from the Mombasa port. That's not to say it can't be done, though. Here is a link you can visit for the park: http://www.kws.go.ke/shimba.html Entrance into the park is $20 for non-residents.
Otherwise, there are marine reserves you can visit for snorkeling or scuba diving: http://www.kws.go.ke/marine.html
Entrance for the ones in and around Mombasa are also $20.
Otherwise you can tour Mombasa town. I would advise using TukTuks (three wheel taxis), and not the notoriously mad matatus (minivans). Tuktuks are cheap and cheerful, they'll get you where you want to go, and you can arrange for them to come back and pick you up when you're ready to move on to the next place.
Fort Jesus, for sure, is one of the major attractions in Mombasa. It is an old fort, built by the Portuguese. It was then taken over by the Omanis. It went back and forth between the two a few times. It has great views of the ocean and harbour. Just up the road from the fort, is a public park with a gigantic strangler Fig tree in the centre. It looks like many different trees, but is in fact only one tree. It's a great place to get out of the heat, and relax on a bench for a breather.
Old Town Mombasa, in general is a great place to visit. Its rich in Swahili culture, with great food and architecture. You can walk down the narrow streets, without being bothered by cars. Just be careful who you take pictures of, and who you allow to be your "guide". There are alot of young boys who'll offer to be your guide and will end up cheating you out of your money. If they see two women with two kids, they may be inclined to try to take advantage of you, thinking you're naive about money. Just be polite, but be firm. If they're really bothering you, turn around and tell them you're actually not really in the mood for a tour of old town. They'll either leave you alone, or bring down their price.
There are some great fabric stores in Mombasa, with traditional Swahili garb on sale at a good price, if your interested in that.
You can also visit the lighthouse for a real mombasa experience. Mombasa residents love to gather there in the evening for dinner and socializing. It's a great place to meet people and get away from the completely touristy scene.
Hope this all helps. and I hope you have a great time!!

Dear Shailaja,
We as a country are honoured that you have decided to jump off board and see our country. We would like to recommend two options for you. This is taking into consideration of the little children;
OPTION 1:
We will offer you a combined tour of the City and to The Shimba Hills Game Reserve that is Located 50 kilometers in The South Lands of Mombasa Island. Why don't you do something completely different which is fun for kids - and for (grand) parents. Visit Wild Waters, a water world where the kids can go absolutely crazy playing in the water!

I would have to agree with the last post. There is no reason to subject a 5 and 9 year old child to an intricate historical tour of the city, they'll be bored out of their minds plus it would be incomprehensible to them. In addition there is little sight seeing you can do In a day; contrary to what you have heard, Mombasa is not as small as many would think.
:
Heres what I recommend:
get off that lovely ship, and convince your entourage that you have to go to
the pizza restaurant on mama ngina drive, and make sure the kids have the swimming gear packed. if they look at you funny tell them you know what you're doing. there you can take a load off and relax by the marina for a bit till early afternoon. Feb can get quite hot so you will want to avoid being caught out at high noon without sun screen. Next after a drink or two, you can take a taxi to wild waters which is about 10 miles from the marina; it a lovely swimming complex with water slides and themes, the works!. they are open til late and have a restaurant inside so that should cover you for at least 2 hours. Before the final hour, grab the kids then grab your mum, hop into a taxi and head on out to the GP karting circuit (5 miles from wild waters), there's a small bistro there where you and your mum can have a night cap while the kids enjoy driving around the GP karting circuit. I guarantee it, by 8pm you will be spent and satisfied with the day. All this under 100 $ US which is about 7,400 KES. hows that for an interesting tour hmmmm?
