...four reported attacks. Is it really that bad in Saint Petersburg? Also, in some reports, groups of homeless children beg and bother tourists on the streets there. How common are these acts by children? Is the situation better, the same or worse since 2004-5? If better, what happened? You guys are great, thanks for prompt and honest responses,

Hi there,
I’ve been living and working here in St.Petersburg since last September and I must say that I’ve never came across any homeless kids begging on the streets and I’ve never seen any signs of aggression towards foreign/migrant workers (from Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, etc.). You read about these attacks, but it’s not something you see on a daily basis. In my opinion, it’s a pretty safe city. Very often I feel safer here than I would’ve done back home (and I’m from London :).

It happens in some regions of SPb - not for tourists.. so if you will avoid this skinheads regions - you will be right! In center it's ok.. You can be shure that Russia is more danger country than any european country.. and one thing - unfortunately sometimes behind the scene is standing russian polce and government - i don't know why - but i remember when after such attacks agains finish tourists in Vyborg finish tourist firms did a boycote of Russia and finish tourist during 1 year didn't come - police and government decided this problem in a moment.. and tourists from Finland started again visit Russia..

Definitely, the cituation is much better than 10 years ago! Less street crime for sure. In every big city, unfortunately, you can find nationalists, beggars and pickpockets, everywhere in the world, so our city is no more dangerous than New York, London or Rome.
The gypsies-beggars used to be a plague 5 years ago, but this year I haven't seen a single one. Pickpockets are more actual problem, so pack your things carefully, and leave your passports and valuables in the hotel safe. Skinheads are attacking local victims, not tourists, from all I've heard.

It happens all over the world, Russia in no where near as bad as lots of other big cities. There is not a lot of violence but take normal tourist precautions. If you are really worried take a 'personal alarm' they are cheap and effective. Maybe even give your daughter one then if she gets lost, she can set it off and you will know where she is.
