I will be stayingin Netherlands for a week during my Europe tour, will be in Amsterdam for New Year. My flights have been booked,I just need to book my stay there. Besides Amsterdam I would like to visit Rotterdam and the Hague. Should I stay in Amsterdam and take day trips to these places or is it better to book a few nights in other cities closer to the sightseeing points? What are must-do activities an places to see in Amsterdam to have fun (leave out the drugs and prostitutes please!).

For me a trip to the Rijkmuseum to check out the Nachtwacht is unmissable. Also the van Gogh museum is worth the visit.
The train connection is great to both Den Haag (the Hague) and Rotterdam so I wouldn't pack and unpack.

Well about your visits to the cities Rotterdam and The Hague, you can stay in Amsterdam. The Hague is approximately 45 minutes by train from Amsterdam and Rotterdam is about 1 hour by train. So when you leave Amsterdam early in the morning you will have plenty of time to visit those cities!
Check My Local List; 'Dutch cities you should visit!' on my profile.
The 'must-do activities' in Amsterdam depends on what your interest is. In My Local List on my profile I have a list of Top Museums in Amsterdam which are worth visiting and other activities I could recommend are going on a canal boat ride, or rent a bike and explore the city.

Hi! i've been to many museum in amsterdam. i really liked Madame Tussaud museum, Van Gogh, Amsterdam historical museum( if you wanna know about Amsterdam). Rijkmuseum is facsinating from outside, but when iwas there inside i seemed to me there is not many things to see.(may be some things were ander restoration). rembrandt museum which is on waterloo plein is small, but there is a guide she will demonstrate how Rembrandt made his etchings( quite interesting, ha?) If you are Jew you should visit Jewish museum ( nearby rembrandt museum as well). If you are intersted in diamonds don't miss diamond factory in front of rijkmuseum- royal museum. If you are interested in Tropical countries and Voudou religion you can go to Tropical museum. There is also weed museum. I quess anne Frank museum is important to see, but it's pretty dark, just a house where a jewish girl was hiding behind the cupboard during the war. For me, russian, i see no reason to go there, because...well, i'm russian.
In the haque i recommend to see Madurodam and Estcher museum.Canal cruise on the boat is wonderful to take also.
Rembrandt and leidse plein is good for night clubbing...:)There are also many restaurants.

Welcome to Holland... when knowing you have new friends ready & willing to help guide you around easily and perhaps in comfort for just under a modest sum like making new friends on Facebook... as an example..

I will advise you, strictly for a successful trip to our country, to the major cities of your choice and because it is short (a week's stint is honestly short), you will achieve more by first googling on our renowned cities and preparing yrself somewhat as DD and then, email me (flechd@gmail.com) your planned itinerary and knowing what you have gathered or learn thus far from yr own research, we both will make it there...., as it will then be customized by your wishes. ;)
I'll secure a suitably & ideally located accommodation (you also need to confide yr lodging preferences too), suited to yr personal needs, its easier when you are traveling like a Hollywood star... and certainly, I won't single out a luxurious VIP suite when you are looking for something modest and affordable... so, let me know on that too.

U're in good hands when u're between Amsterdam and Rotterdam... by being closer to our Queen's Palace (within radius of 12 kms) in the Hague. Cheersch... as we say it here in Holland... :)

Desmond.

I meant, its "NOT" easy when you want to travel like a Hollywood star.... :) unless you like signing autographs and paparazzi squirming all over your trail... :((

The Netherlands have a nice public transport system. Amsterdam - Rotterdam is just one hour by train. So, just find a nice place to stay for your whole stay in the NL.

Amsterdam has a lot to offer, from a zoo to museums, from markets to an active cultural scene... dependent on your wishes, you can make your own programm

Our country is a very tiny country, so all the cities are in short distance from eachother. You can also turn it around, stay in one of your prefered cities and visit amsterdam. Most accommodation are cheaper outside our capital. Think about Rotterdam (stayokay is a Duch youth hostel chain);
' In 2009, Stayokay will be opening a new hostel in the centre of Rotterdam in the striking Cube Houses. The renovation of the world-famous pylon homes designed by the Dutch architect Piet Blom is now in full swing. It is a large-scale project and the results will be very impressive. The 46-room hostel will be decorated simply and stylishly according to a design created by the Edward van Vliet/SEVV design agency. All rooms will have their own washing facilities and the hostel will be fitted with state-of-the-art facilities. Until the opening, we will gladly accommodate any guests at our Rochussenstraat hostel.'

And from Rotterdam my hometown Breda, is also pretty closeby. Well about Mustsees in AMS, those aren't hard to find, I think you'll manage. But consider visiting 'de Zaanse Schans' for a glimpse of typical Holland....(http://www.zaanseschans.nl/ pages in English available). Check out the pages of our railway system as well (also in English) www.ns.nl to figure out the travelling time between the cities of your choise. Hope to see you in Holland and especially in my hometown BREDA!!!! Need more information, feel free to contact me. Cheers! Eva

Depending on when you're coming (apr-jun is best) the train ride from a'dam to r'dam is quite pleasant. (1 Hr and 20 euros) it also travels through the tulip fields and through small towns such as Leiden and Delft. If your looking for a dutch experience Delft is it, and its just outside R'dam. With so much to do in Amsterdam i would stay there and take a day trip or two outside to the others. (FYI The "red light" district is such a small area it is easily avoidable and a very small bit of the variety of culture and amusements that A'dam has to offer)

I would stay in Amsterdam and get a weekly rail card. It's less tiring if you don't have to keep packing and unpacking, and you'll waste time finding your new hotel every day. The trains to the places you mention are all journeys of under 1 hour and the main train stations are always right in the centre. I would try some of the smaller dutch cities like Delft and Edam. And even do a bike/bus trip from Amsterdam to some dutch villages like Marken. Then you'll see a mix of real Dutch life, rather than city life which tends to be similar all over the world.
