In Dunedin the locals know where to drive to see little blue penguins come ashore every night. At Pilot's Beach near the famous Royal Albatross Centre, up to 100 penguins live. At sunset they can be viewed in the wild, no entrance fee or turnstiles to negotiate, just the pathway in the twilight.

In Auckland, the locals like to go to the flea/craft/farmers markets on a Sunday. In various suburbs around the city. Usually starts from around 7 am to 12 o'clock noon. On the North Shore, Takapuna flea market is great, and the one in Browns Bay just as good. These are open every Sunday.
Most towns around New Zealand have flea markets at least once a month. Spend a few cheap hours among the locals and buy local products. Very enjoyable!

Try guided tramping (hiking) in one of our Conservation or National Parks. One of the best is the Hakatere Conservation Park in Canterbury in the South Island. Local guiding operators know the best places to go to, huts to stay in and interpret the landscape, fauna & flora (as well as getting you back safely).

The Queen Charlotte track is a great walk, plenty to see and do there or just chill out in a bach hired from someone in this stunning area, get a local to take you snapper or trout fishing or how about pig hunting in the area.

There are great walks all over New Zealand, but Kapiti Island is just off the coast at Paraparaumu. Here you can get up close and personal with our native birds. I would also recommend a bungy jump or swing in Queenstown, I have done the highest at Nevis Canyon. Truly a memorable event.

Queenstown is a pretty awesome place. It does get a lot of flack for being too 'touristy' but I've lived here for quite a few years amd if you don't want to be around the tourist crowd when down here, just do the many walks, or smaller activities on offer. Head down to Glenorchy horse riding or hire kayaks and go for a paddle.
Walk up the gondola hill and get a free ride back down. It's a great wee walk and save $30 or so bucks!

In Rotorua only the locals know where to go for a hot steamy bathe in free hot pools.

Waikite hotpools are Rotoruas best kept secret.Clean, no smell, high volume of water flow flushing thru the pools 24\7 which keeps the pool water very clean. Nice rural kiwi setting with a very good cafe with excellent unique kiwi food. Excellent friendly, helpful staff.It is so good I will drive 25 minutes to Waikite instead of the overcrowded, highly commercialised city facilities.
I also recommend a walk up the Eco-Trail to the Te Manaroa Spring...What a sight!

Visitors can get off the beaten path in franklin county, Karioatahi Beach is wild west coast that you can still 4wd down the beach. Agave restaurant on cliffs offers sea views and sunsets. Accommodation there as well with sea views, beach activities available too. Surfing,fishing,tandem hang gliding or rugged solitude good for beach walks... farther out is Manakau Heads with stunning views to the sea or back over harbour to see the city lights of Auckland. Wineries, golf courses and horseback treks among things to do as well... cheers

Whitiagna, and Hot water Beach. Its on the corromandel penninsula, You can go onto the beach and dig a hole, and after a few minutes the hole you dug will fill with warm water from the thermal waters underground.

If you want to go flying in a historic DC3 aircraft and see canterbury let me know. Depending what season you are coming but in canterbury if you are here in September..go skiing in the morning then have the afternoon at the beach..just gorgeous!

Drive around Ahipara in a 4wd, visit Waiheke Island for some wine tasting, shopping in the second hand stores in St Kevin's arcade (off Karangahape Rd), surf Manu bay, roller skate in Orakei, take a ferry to Motatapu or Rangitoto, swim in the KareKare waterfalls or walk to Anawhata, bathe in the hot pools near lake Rotama....
