Everything is fun to do in El Salvador as long as you are with a local, people are friendly and helpful, there's no secret things only locals do, cause when you're here they'll be more than glad to show you everything they do.
Amazing things to look at are the Crater Lake (Lago de Coatepeque)one of the world wonders, the ruins, the little artesan towns and how they live is the most interesting thing to spen an afternoon watching.
Eating mangos and pupusas, or drinking local fruit juices.
That will be some of the highlights of El Salvador but most of all the culture taht is a full mix of traditions and

Rarely, uhmmmm.

I guess...
Enjoying a coffee cup down the sunset orange sky in any of our little towns like chalatennago, la palma, metapan, morazan, amog others.
feeling the thrill to travel in our extreme public transport system, in some occassions, it is really funny.
Roadtripping on the back part of a pickup, that could carry from cows and horses, to other people.
Night Beach swiming
Eating cuzuco, garrobo, sopa de patas, empanadas, chilate y atol chuco and other tipycal meals
there are a lot of other secrets, some of them are very sutile, some other are just "moments" expiriences that are common amog the locals, thing that we dont care to share.

that would be my answer.
Visit El Salvador. Its Just amazing!

I have to agree with Quiver Surf El Salvador that there are not "secret" things that only locals do because most people will GLADLY show you what we do.

But there's one thing that comes to my mind.

Now that Holly Week is coming, most people go to the beach or the mountains to relax because it might be their only vacation during the whole year. But the real celebrations happens in towns were religious tratitions are still in use.

This year, for the first time in my life, I will help designing a SALT CARPET in JUAYUA (I could invite someone to join us).

And what is a SALT CARPET?? well its a carpet made of salt (prety obvious) and can be from 1 to 10 metters long. Teams normaly do these carpets during friday (all day) and by saturday they're gone. It's all part of the conmemoration of the Holly Week.

=D
have a nice trip in El Salvador!!!!!!!!!!!

Few excursions in this world are as special as following the "ruta de las flores" the flower route. This journey takes travelers through some of the worlds most colorful and finest coffee growing regions.

Stopping for lunch on the way at one of the several typical restaurants on the lush grounds of some of the most well known coffee "fincas" is always memorable. The menus are packed with typical delicacies and the wait staff very helpful. Not too many speak English, but they are patient and almost always have a good sense of humor. The delicious fruit drinks made from local fruits in season are not to be missed.

We like to rent a farmhouse and spend one or two nights kicking back and after a hearty breakfast of fresh eggs, tortillas, cheese, beans and of course coffee walking around the very green flower filled garden and going horse back riding. This is always a very relaxing and not very expensive escape for us.

A visit to the town of Ataco is also a must because there we walk the cobblestone streets and walk in and out of the many craft shops seeing craftsmen working on their ancient looms turning out the typical cloths this area is known for. Some of the most beautiful table cloths we use at home come from Ataco.

One of the major advantages of this trip, and most trips in El Salvador for that matter, is that you are never more than an hour or so away from the San Salvador, capital city of El Salvador. So if you feel fatigued, you will never be very far from your comfortable hotel room.

Go hiking to the Izalco Volcano up and down the crater; take a tan at the beautiful Barra de Santiago Beach and enjoy there fresh oysters and conchas cocktail in which the conchas are eaten live and they move while you swallow them ; visit a coffee plantation at the Apaneca Mountains and see how coffee is harvested, and if you get hungry ask a native to sell you a live hen and you will be able to see the whole preparation until you finally enjoyed a barbecue chicken with an extraordinary view of the town of Ahuachapan at aproximately 1500 meters above sea level.

I suggest visiting during "Semana Santa" local catholic churches and experiencing the rites and culture around this catholic tradition in small towns along the country. I also suggest tasting some great seafood at the Merliot Market (Mercadito de Merliot) on a saturday lunch. In addition, I suggest to travel along the highway " Carretera del Litoral" and enjoying the wonderfull view along the coast line from La Libertad to Acajutla, going through the 5 tunnels, and stopping at the different "miradores" view points, and tasting the excellent food in the various restaruants and small "challets" along the roads.
In addition a great experience is to meet local people when harvesting their crops, specially when the time is right for "la corta de cafĂŠ" coffee crop harvesting.

There are no special things that local really do, but since we have such a unique country something that is common for us, could be a really great experience for a visitor, the important thing is that you have a local to guide you and not to be afraid of share new experiences, always in the safest way possible... El Salvador such a great country...!

I don't want to disagree with the things said here but there are things that only local do, and some are not so common to everybody, eating in the markets eat a "Sopa de gallina" (chicken raised old style wandering around the houses, very muscular and stiff ones), drink "chuco" (hot beverage made of black corn with beans inside) in the street, as we say put some heat between chest and back in a "expendio" (local we may say carry out bars with local made liquor very similar to the moonshine but made from sugar cane) with "Boca de paisaje" or "jocote leaves", go and take a little swimm in the "turicentros" these are little complexes of swimming pools managed by the state like "Los Chorros" in the highway to Santa Ana, also is eat "panes del chino" o "chory's" that are hot dogs with a salvadorian twist but I have to warn you these are heavy artilliery to you stomach, and there are some things that are so common to us that we cannot think about it like special thing that we do like throw rocks to "bajar mangos" (to take down mangoes from threes), take a little swim in a river but never in the Acahuapa ask around and you will know why, eat mango twist in the street, oranges with worcestershire sauce, eat "elotes locos" (another high caliber food) and there are so many food that really only salvadorians eat like all the thing that got alguaiste (smashed dryed pumpkin seed) and to be honest many salvadorians me included never had the guts to taste them. and are so many thing more but you have to come and see by yourself.
