People in Macedonia try to keep their tradition as much as they can and also they they never forget where they came from. Most of the people if not 90% of them have their roots in one the local villages but now they live in the cities. So every free weekend they use to visit this villages, catch some fresh air and beautiful sites. Mother nature has gifted Macedonian mountains with unseen beauty, untouched nature and unforgetable sites. There are beautiful mountain lakes, caves and many churches and monasteries and because rural turism in Macedonia isn't developed well yet I believe that turists in Macedonia should experience this "lifestyle" that Macedonians practice.

Hi, at the very begging i will say that Macedonia is a country with plenty valuable and beautiful locations which offer a lot of enjoyment and fun. I can not separate one from another as the most beautiful, your tour depends of your personal interest and the way you evaluate the term interesting and fun,It depends what are you looking in your road taking this tour. If you are young person I suggest you to take tour in the south and north-east part of the country, where you can find a lot of traces from the Macedonian history and heritage. There are several amazing churches, lakes and beautiful old architecture which is worth to see, also the natural resources offer amazing view:)

Macedonia is a wonderful country, full of natural and cultural wealth. You can find fun activities when you want, whether in nature, enjoying the national food, drinks and music, or you can visit some of the music or film festivals in our country. Also Macedonia has a great Nightlife, concerts and performances by local bands, but also well-known musicians. I hope that I helped someone.
Sincere greetings

The nature offers a lot of beautiful places. I love the fact that everyone can find his own favorite place. That kind of places can be only 15 minutes far from the crowd and the streets. I have it as well, and i go always when I'm free. I wanna say that here, we have so many wonderful places, where you can "hide" from the others and connect with the nature.Try...

Macedonia is small beautifull place with lots of history behind itself. Travel trough Macedonia, you will notice old houses, old churches, old buildings, untouced nature, big mountains, country tourism... If you like to have fun, you definitly should visit Macedonians waterfalls in eastern Macedonia, or some Macedonian mountain such as Pelister, Mavrovo Galicica, Sar Planina. You can also visit Ohrid and Prespa.. especially prespa, where you can find country tourism like sleeping in churches, eat traditional macedonian food, go to parties in country clubs... all at all, you won't regret if you visit Macedonia (South west parth of Macedonia) Bitola, and Prespa

Dionysian cult is permanently lasting through the history in my area (south-eastern part of Macedonia....15 km from Pela, the birthplace of Alexander the Great)...area most known by the quality of wine and hedonistic life. That is proved by a huge number of artifacts u can found around as well as in the local people/inhabitants mentality, and the secret limbs which only local bohemians knows. Recommended (4 small groups only) if you want to loose yourself through the beauties of nature and hanging out with local bohemians.

Hey Localyte team,
I know some fun things that really few tourists experience:
- Take a boat and visit the "snake island" in Prespa lake, offering some unique plants and trees, and obviously, lots of snakes. There are also some remnants of ancient civilization;
- Tandem flight with a professional hang-gliding pilot near Ohrid (one of my services);
- Visit the ancient astronomic observatory (3rd oldest in the World);
- Visit caves and waterfalls, canyoning;
- Skiing in 3 ski resorts - foreign tourists rarely go skiing there;
- Organized hunting tours.
If you have any questions, contact me.

People in Macedonia on local level have no habit to do marketing on some very nice things they are professing. That's why local tourism in Macedonia is so low even unknown.
But that's why we are here! Let's say in Demir Kapija: you can take a tour to Demir Kapija Canyon (the highest one in Macedonia) were we have unique flora and fauna. After, you can drink local wine and enjoy in the oldest winery (very first on)on Balkan on sunset. It's amazing!

Have you ever wondered how do people from Ohrid catch fish? There's an old tradition of fishing with special nets for small fish, and an amazing technique for fishing salmon. You can be a fisherman's guest in his own boat, rowing and helping him to catch more fish!
Also, discover the secret of making the world-famous Ohrid pearl in the original tradition-keeping families.

Easter in Ohrid (Hair burning night)
18/04/2009 - 21/04/2009
Place: Ohrid
Probably Ohrid never looks so mystical's and charming like the night before Easter on 18 of April, this year, when thousands of people are getting together in the local churches at midnight for the ceremony of sacred communion waiting to be blessed by red wine and bread. It is a custom that everybody lights a candle and walks with the candle back to one's home. The candle must be burning all the time. All the streets of Ohrid are being filled with thousands of people walking with burning candles and it looks like the entire city is in a kind of religious trans. Since the churches are being packed with hundreds of people holding the burning candles in their hands, it is happening that people's hair sometimes get burned from the candles, though this event is populary called "hair burning night". Definitely, it is worth being in Ohrid for Easter.

Macedonia is a country with great history and wild untouched nature. For a moment you can be back in the time of antic Macedonia and visit the fortress and guard towers build by the army of Alexander the Great. You can walk on the famous antic roman road via ignatia. You can see the early Christian basilica, cave churches and the first school of St. Clement. All of this and much more in just one day, in just several hours of walk.

Why don't you experience an enjoyable activity of picking mushrooms somewhere in Macedonian mountains and woods?
Or make a rare collection of butterflies of some 1600 different types present in such a small area like Macedonia?

People and Nature are the two things that Macedonia as a country can be proud of. People are extremely open, sincere, friendly, very hospitable (when it regards foreigners, but not the Greeks or Albanians, unfortunately). And Macedonia has beautiful mountains, such as in Galicica National Park, Matka Canyon, lots of monasteries in the mountains, lakes...
The good thing is that the country is still not very discovered by tourists and you can feel free to talk to local people who are always interested in tourists, not seeking to trick them or smth.
