Safety in Venezuela for backpacking
Web
Hello, I would like to ask, whether it is safe to travel on your own in Venezuela these days just with a backpack and if you would recommend to take a local guide, or if it is completely OK to travel on your own. We would like to visit mostly remote destinations such as Andes and jungle in the south-east. Thank you very much for any information. Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Travelling in Venezuela can be done safely, even without a guide. Try to stay away from bigger cities, such as Caracas, and if you arrive at the airport, try to connect your flight to your next destination, or take a taxi to one of the private bus terminals you can find in Lonely Planet, and leave for your next destination. Tourist places, such as Canaima, Santa elena, Caura river, Pto. Ayacucho, mainly to the south, can be consdired safe, but you should follow simple recommendations, as to go very low profile.
Margarita can be safe too, MĂŠrida, and beaches as ChoronĂ, Morrocoy, los Roques as well.
As told, try to stay out of the bigger cities.
Kind Regards

Hi!, as all latinamerican countries these days -with the financial crisis and everything worldwide-, I can say that is better if u come to Venezuela with a friend, stay in a mid-nice hotel in Caracas, be careful about going out at night and the transportation u use in the capital. Are u from USA?, imagine Caracas as New York but with a not so eficient police, then you have an idea ;).
Then, you guys can perfectly go to the jungle of Los Andes, but paying for a guide to go there because they are natural, wild and far spots which mean that everybody has to use a guide to enter and enjoy.

All the answers above are very accurate. Lots of travelers backpack in Venezuela. You can always ask for a good guide to help you, but you can do it alone too. It's very easy, always try to take recognized tours, look for "legal" taxis or buses, avoid the dangerous zones "looking" like a foreigner. My principal advice is to come with a group, try not to come alone.... you can contact me if you need any help. Regards...

As long as you know where you're going you won't have any problems in this country. It's a matter of attitude and presence. Avoid big cities, specially past 8 p.m. and you'll have a ball for your entire trip. Dress low key, nothing fancy, no big cameras or expensive gear, no flag boasting where you come from...blend in. Documentation is important too. Lonely Planet gives very good advices you should browse the website and get the latest copy of Venezuela for back packers. We have beautiful beaches on the North Eastern coast, backpacker's paradise because it's off the grid of foreign tourism. They go to Margarita. Feel free to ask all you want, we can help you to design the trip of your dreams. Beware, South America is highly addictive, you'll fall in love with it!

Hi Thomas:
I think it´s OK for you to come and travel on your own. However, it is better if you come with a group. You can move easily around by public transportation between main cities but, once you get there you have to rely yourself in a good guide if you want to visit remote destinations. For instance, in MÊrida there are places that you need to be taken by someone. There are a lot of posadas in Merida with people tha can take you to those places. I live in the eastern part of the country and we get a lot of foreign visitors. If you come to visit you can contact me and I can help you with your trip.

Hello Tomas, of course it is safe, if you know Spanish to communicate through, otherwise it would be better to be with a guide, the Andes is a beautiful area to visit, because I've already been there, and jungle, better known as La Gran Sabana is a unique and spectacular place of Venezuela, and although there are guides in these places they do not speak English. I hope I can be this helpful and if they need my help for your journey, do not hesitate to contact me, Best Regards ...

All of the guys and gals are right: be carefull, dont come alone. But hey, this place aint so bad. There are lotsa things you can do here, enjoy and visit. Watch out the food and drinks, travel and walk by day, keep your attitude as if you know what you are doing and be sure where u wanna go. Maybe getting a deposit box for valuables is a good idea... just in case.
Get some local help, its allways the best way to go.
If you plan on visiting Aragua beaches and Colonia Tovar, gimme a howler.

Hi Thomas,
I think you have had many answers to your question. I agree with the guy who says that now there is not security here. But that doesn´t mean you will be killed or something. Many people is still coming here and they are ok. Just come if you want to and be careful, if you come with another person or a group would be better. This is a great country even with the difficult situation we are facing right now.
Go to Margarita Island and you will have fun and you will see one of the greatest caribbean beaches and you will meet nice people....Merida and La Gran Sabana are places to go too.....
Be blessed!!!

Well, Venezuela it's not the safest country of America, It's beautiful, But the biggest problem is transportation, you could rent a car to move but it is not easy to get hotels without prior booking. There are people who make no trouble, but I say with disappointment that it is preferable to seek advice with travel agencies. So you can see all the sites you want. Any doubt, here I am and I can advise! Greetings

hi! well it really depends of the city you're going to.. becuase Venezuela.. right now.. is a danegerous country because of the goverment problems that we're having right now.. so i recommend you to travel with other people.. minimum 4 and at least 1 of them should know how to speak spanish. Try to go to the beaches, jungles, natural places like thosem Venezuela has lots of awesome and incredible natural places that you'll never forget. so if you're traveling backpacking, you can do it but come here with other people, at least 1 bilingual person and lots of joy and aventurer spirit to be able to know this wonderful country

Safe? I think anywhere you go, whether Venezuela or any other part of the world, one need to take precautions. You can, of course come backpacking by yourself in Venezuela, but need to take precautions. There's lots of places you can travel by yourself, but also some, especially in the south eastern part such as Canaima, Gran Sabana, Roraima, Santa Elena, El Pauji, etc, that you would be needing locals to help you around, because some places have difficult access; where you need to take a special hire car, a boat or an airplane, to take you. So you would need help to get there. For where ever you decide to travel, please contact me at crisangellike@yahoo.es, so that I can help you with whatever you want. And for places that are far from my location, I have friends working in those other areas, that can help you out.

Hi Thomas,
Well if you're going to los Andes, I don't think you would need a local guide if you know some Spanish, if you don't it might be a little more difficult. However you can still do this trip by yourself.
What i strongly recommend is for you to plan in advance where you want to go, book everything before coming, and have a map with the detailed addresses of the places you'd need to go, and other important things such as bus stations, hotels, intesting places, etc.
In Caracas, it'd be safer to have a person to help you.
Whatever you decide, it will be great to have you visiting my country!
Cheers
Ling

Hi there... I love my country so much, it is a beautiful place... its heaven, but you have to be carefoul... specially being born in the united states. when poor and bad people see a blond hair and hear you speaking... they could have bad ideas... very bad ideas, i recommend if you want to go to the jungle, you get to maiquetia airport and INMEDIATLY take a plain to puerto ordaz... dont go visiting big cities, dont talk to anyone in the airport of maiquetia, specially there, dont listen to the people outside the international airport... and have a lot of common sense... it is a beautiful but dangerous place. good luck and count with me if you travel to los andes!!

yes it is still o.k. you should however avoid being on the street when it is dark. i mean try to be already checked in to the hotel before ten or eleven p.m. if you wish to go out, do so, but remember taxi rides at night are more than 10 us$. good luck and have fun.

Hey, Thomas! Lots of foreign people come backpacking to this country on their own, but taking a local guide is always better, since they can provide information about the places you visit. Los Andes is mostly a safe zone (people are like the nicest there), and if you want to visit remote places, even more. Just be wary of large cities, such as Caracas or Valencia.

Hello my friend: there is no such thing as safety anymore in our country in any place at all. Everywhere you go you are at very high risk of being mugged, robbed, kidnapped or even killed for just a handful of bills. I do not recommend you travel alone, much less if you are backpacking. Try to have a party of at least four people if you want to backpack in our country. Just for you to know, there are more than 60 persons killed every weekend in Venezuela. Los andes and La Gran Sabana are areas with less crime because there is less people living there. If you want to come alone, get a bilingual guide to go with you. You will no regret it.
