I've done Delhi to Leh and back via Srinagar on motorcycles last year. You can read about it on http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080831/jsp/calcutta/story_9767861.jsp
It cost us close to Rs. 30000.

Ladakh By Bus

Ladakh is connected to Srinagar and Jammu by road. Two roads are connected to Ladakh. Srinagar to Ladakh by Zoji La Pass and Manali to Ladakh by Rohtang Pass. Zoji La Pass opens between June and October. Rohtang Pass opens between July and September. JKSRTC and HRTC provide bus facilities. Jeep taxis also will be available.

Jammu To Srinagar is 306 Kms. which take 1 day to reach with Fares between Rs. 120 to Rs. 220 depending upon Bus type. Srinagar To Leh is 434 Kms. via Kargil which takes 2 days. Therefore, total from Jammu to Leh is 740 Kms.

You may check-out the following link of J&K State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) to know the Fares between places in Jammu & Kashmir.

Dude bus journey will kill you. If flight is in your budget you should consider taking a flight to Leh. Also the best time to visit this place is June during the Hemis festival. Its absolutely worth taking the trip then. We would be going to Leh this year during Hemis. Lemme know if you would like to join in.

Make sure you take it easy on the climb from Manali. Give your body time to acclimatise. There are loads of tents run by the locals by the roadside. You can stay in one of them overnight.

For accommodation, if you stay in one of the Ladakhi's homestays it'll turn out cheaper than staying at a hotel. Besides, its a unique experience staying with a local family.

Enjoy your trip!

Rekha has given a very sane advice.. Since traveling to Ladakh means passing through mountain passes upto 5000 mtrs. altitude, one should take it easy and do the Srinagar-Leh or Manali-Leh sector in 2 or more days to avoid HAPO. Remember, to drink lots of fluids, avoid alcoholic beverages and carry aspirin tablets. Never try to be brave if you don't feel well. consult the nearest doctor in such a case. The Indian Army's medical facilities enroute are good and open to all. Having done this trip over 50 times, I have seen many people suffer severe problems... so best to be careful. Otherwise, Ladakh is one of the most beautiful parts of India and the people are so hospitable... have fun and enjoy the trip.

anurag has given a good answer...just keep in mind the fact the timing of your trip...the roads have to be free of snow and as mentioned the Passes have to be motorable...just the other day, we heard this story from a brit, about how he got his dates mixed up and came all the way only to find that his bike won't make it all the way!!!
