There are a number of tour operators in New York City. You can take a 4-hour tour bus that will give you the highlights of different sections of the city. You can take a two-day pass that will allow you to get on and off that bus. That would be your best option. Foods of New York is a walking tour that combines history, culture, and food.

Your best bet would probably be a tour guide, easily locateable on google or citysearch. As far as neighborhoods, you should try to explore the Lower East Side, below Houston St to get a feel for some of the grittyness of NYC , the little that remains

My suggestion would be to google tour guides for New York City. Go on craiglist.org and click on New York and post an add under general employment and see who responds. Be specific. Hope you enjoy your time in NY.
