First it is easy to rent a car : you can do it at the airport or then later when you are in the city, for example Helsinki or Turku.
It is really easy to drive in Finland but be cautious : they don't tolerate so much going over the limit; if it says 80, it's better to go 80 and not 90.
Apart from that, the traffic is really minimal, even around big cities.
About the distances, it of course depends where you want to go : from Helsinki to Rovaniemi in Lapland, there are about 600 to 700 hundred kilometers.
But if you want to visit the three major cities (Helsinki, Tampere and Turku), they are all situated at about 130 kilometers from each other.
If you are not sure about renting a car, you should know that the public transports are clean, always on time and don't cost as much as renting a car and paying the gas for it; if you plan to move around a lot, you can always buy a European rail pass for Finland and use the train for free for the time you will be there.

Hi

Yes, a car is good idea in Finland. Distances are long and public transportation means are not so regular. I recommend to save a one number to call for help, if the car stops running. This can be also useful link http://www.autoliitto.fi/in_english/road_service/

The roads are long and you might be the only user of the road. :)
