I would check out the cruise ship lines that operate in the Pacific.I know that at least one runs a discounted special in our winter months (northern hemisphere summer)from NZ up to North America.

I would check with your local shipping agents or travel agents ,many cruise ships come to NZ over our summer period & sometimes I believe you can also pick up apassage by working on merhant ships too can take a couple of weeks to get here. hope this helps.

There is a company that offers freighter cruises - far cheaper than the average cruiser liner. Freighter Cruises is currently taking bookings for the 2009/2010 season. They have six routes – “Around the World”, Asia, Pacific Islands, Europe, North America and South America.
This company www.freightercruises.com.au handles departures ex Australia, but may be able to assist you with departures ex SFO.
Depends when you want to travel ... the cruise season here is now ending, so most ships are heading back north, not coming south. The Aurora regularly sails from SFO to Auckland though :)

There are heaps more cruise lines heading to Auckland since this question was fist asked. Just thought I'd add that in case anyone is searching this thread. Or, you can always fly in and get on a ship here of which there are many choices.
