Mmm for me the best part of Santiago would be Providencia district (comuna), basically beacuse it is centered, you are near down town but it is a safier place and it has everything you need as well.

As everything in life it depends... Santiago is one of the most socio-economicly stratified cities in Chile and perhaps south-america, wealthy people mostly live in the oriental part of the city while the middle classes live in the western side (the historic center is right in the middle of the city). The city is divided in zones called "comunas" these comunas vary from very country-like places around the mountains of the western side, with amazing nature sanctuaries, to more metropolitan zones with good night life, restaurants and shopping stores near the central part of the city...(though you can find great shopping malls allover Santiago) so as I mentioned in the beginning of this review... it all depends of what you're looking for. My personal taste is that the better parts of Santiago to live are in the "comunas" Lo Barnechea, Las Condes, Vitacura, Providencia, Bellavista, hence they are more expensive zones to live in, and therefore they manage to keep they're neighborhoods modern, safer and pretty.

Santiago is a big city (6 mill. inhabitants) and I would also say, that Providencia and Las Condes are good parts to live in. In La Dehesa are the best houses and people with high income. What are you looking for?

As a foreign resident, I find Providencia very pretty, safe and relatively close to all places I want to go. I would recommend finding a place close to the metro if you don't plan on getting a car. The metro is inexpensive, convenient and safe. The stops are generally well marked on Google maps.

It all depends in your needs, what you like and what you want in a neighborhood in Santiago.
If you like quiet I recommend Las Condes, La Reina, La Dehesa.
If you like the bohemian and be close to everything and eveyone I recommend Providencia.
There are many options for everyone in the City of Santiago.
Good luck and enjoy the challenge.
best regards, sincerely.
Marcela.

Dino, probably your should look in Providencia or "Barrio Universitario" "Barrio Lastarria", the last two, both in the center of Santiago for that kind of housing... though you should always be careful when walking the streets of Santiago, specially if your carrying laptops, cellphones, digi cams etc. "technology" because often thiefs, "purse snatchers", like a lot those public areas where people tend to gather for public transport. These zones where you can find that kind of housing, are nice (in a urban way), but you must be discrete anyhow, most of all at the evenings and in the night.

maybe near downtown the so called "Barrio Universitario" its a nice, secure and not so expensive area, and you can find many appartments for rent at reasonable prizes, also you might consider renting a place near your future work so you can optimize time

I think Providencia is the best place. You are close of the most important things. Also is safe, and you have subway. You can walk in the night. Get a cab for go to other places won“t be expensive... You have nice bar for go out in the night. If you are looking for something, try to find between Pedro de Valdivia Subway staion and Tobalaba Subway station!

kind regards!

I recommended -zona oriente- areas like Providencia, Las Condes or Nunoa, they are very safe areas. Providencia is more central near to metro lines.

Sincerely,an answer to your question is a difficult answer. We firstly want to know what are you interested in?

For me, the best part of the city to live in is La Florida. He re you next to the most important centres of entertainment; such as the mountains to climb at the Maipo Canyon, the main highways to get to the coastline, the main ski centres, the Panamerican Highway. The air is fresh, the night are enliven by the best discos and pubs. Best location for residence is Lo CaƱas or the higher areas of this district.

I would recomend ƑuƱoa and Providencia, they are both very quiet and safe places, near to everything you need, with ease of access. ƑuƱoa has a lot of green areas compared with other districts and it is a very nice, peaceful place to live, like a little piece of paradise in the middle of a noisy and polluted city.

Providencia sounds like your best, cheaper bet. Its close to many metro stops, and everything is close that you can walk most places. It also safe enough that you can walk late night, but always be careful, no matter where you are.
If you can and want to afford something a little nicer, Las Condes and Vitacura and a little "newer" you could say. Some bigger houses and higher income families live in these "comunas"
Hope you find something man, look in the local classifieds. Some sites are www.emol.com, www.lun.cl, www.latercera.cl
